preventing overheating

The motherboard on my old gaming pc gave up the ghost after 4 years, and I'm taking the opportunity to sell all the remaining parts and start from scratch with a gaming laptop.

I know that desktops give more bang for the buck, so no need to remind me.

I plan to spend between 1800 and 2000 dollars on this but I have one major concern:

I use computers constantly. upwards of 10 hours a day sometimes. I've never had a problem with overheating with previous builds, but they have all been desktops.

i already plan on getting top-of-the-line thermal compound, but beyond that there don't seem to be many options for keeping system temperature down.

Do you think I'm at risk of greatly reducing my laptops longevity, considering my extreme usage patterns?

Thanks in advance!

considering your budget i would suggest Asus G73 series laptops, they'll work great since they've best cooling of all laptops out there + you can get more like SSD and stuff with that budget to reduce heat much more. you can also upgrade the CPU and ram and if you go to http://www.xoticpc.com/ and customize it and they'll put their own diamond compound which are great too.

Many laptops have great cooling solutions. And it doesn't matter if you use it 10 hours a day. A laptop will get to maximum temperature in minutes if stressed. When you're looking around for laptops just make sure you read professional reviews. NotebookPC.com has some great reviews that actually give you external temperatures of laptops. My laptop, the Thinkpad X201 (w/ Core i3 390m 2.66ghz dual core CPU) gets barely warm to the touch, even when playing games like CSS.

well if i were you, and this message might be still worth while, I'd go for a Alienware, or for an envy. those are the tops for the money you want to spend.

I'm currently looking at AVADirect. I already own a copy of windows 7 professional, so saving a hundred or so on an operating system is nice. I will definitely do a price comparison with Asus.

I'm not sure I understand this correctly. Do you really mean that extreme usage, definitely while playing games (which I imagine stress the hardware), will not effect my laptop longterm? If so, happy day!

It will, but how long term are we speaking of. Most likely the laptop will be out dated before it fails due to heat. That is if you keep the vent obstruction free and the insides of your laptop dust free.

I don't try to stay on the bleeding edge of computer hardware. Considering heavy, but responsible (vent certainly obstruction free, being careful with dust), use do you think the laptop would survive 3 years? Possibly more?

I would imagine so. But its hard to say. It's also different from laptop to laptop. If the one you purchase is known to run cool and I'd say 3 years is very reasonable. if the laptop you purchase is prone to over heating, then it's a completely different story.

Hi shinsukato,

Your posting caught my attention because I saw that one of the Forum members recommended an HP Envy. Here is a link for one of the notebooks in the Envy series:
