Primary HD suddenly disappears

Hi, my friend built is computer 2 years ago and it was working just fine until last night it suddenly just stopped working. His primary HD doesn't show up in setup anymore.

He has a Asus P5Q pro mobo and Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 we tried changing the Sata cable and power cables. Same thing. He also has a Secondary HD which still shows up. The primary HD is not making any weird noises but I am very sure that it is still spinning inside. Any ideas on how to check if it is really dead? Would it work if I plugged the secondary sata into the slot where the primary was originally plugged in?

thanks

Change sata ports, try the hard drive in another system. Even if the drive spins up it still might not be detected.

I tried plugging the HD in another sata port and it still does not show up. Could I plug it in another computer as secondary when it originally was primary?

Yes, but most likely if plugging into a different sata port didn't make it appear then it probably won't appear when plugging into a different machine. But try it anyway.

Okay, I just tried plugging it into a different machine and still doesn't show up. Is it safe to say that it is gone for good?

Thanks for the help

If you are sure you are connecting it right then yes its shot. You might want to let a computer tech tell you for sure.

Using different cables was the first thing I did. I have 2 computers here with 3 HD's I put the 2 primary HD's in both computers and yea that one that stopped working all of a sudden doesn't work on either computer while the other one works on both.

I was about to ask if you were using a Seagate. The 7200.11 has a known firmware issue. From the sound of it, it was never upgraded. The data is fine. Essentially something on the controller board gets confused and essentially times out, thus the drive never initializing.

I'd suggest calling Seagate. They may still be willing to do something seeing how many of these drives were affected.

Thanks. My friend called Seagate and they are willing to replace the HD.
