Printer has just died

Hi,
I went to print something on my lexmark z708 printer the other day and it just didn't work, it is plugged in and I have tried it in different sockets, but when I press the power button nothing happens, has anyone got any ideas about this? from what i can see at the moment it like i'm going to be needing a new printer

To be honest, these days the cost of ink cartridges are so high, it's almost cheaper to buy a new printer regardless. I've bought printers on sale with rebate that come with a set of cartridges, the cost being less than a set of after-sales cartridges! Printers are initially sold as a loss leader and the manufacturer makes up the money with expensive cartridges. If you have a high quality printer that may not be an option but I don't think Lexmark is in that category!

Hmm..., I wonder if the power converter died. If that's the case the manufacturers are the only ones that carry such a device. If you're looking for a new printer, take a gander at Buying a Printer 101 before doing anything... :)

Off topic: What happened to the bodybuilding hampster? He was cute! :)
 
Have you checked the fuse in the plug? We don't have such things over here (well not in the plug anyway)!

If you are a fiddler you could take the case apart and look for loose wires or a non-functional switch. Definitely not worth having repaired. Minimum charge is probably 2/3 cost of basic printer with cartridges.

lol, not sure, i just fancied a change!
and i was hoping the advice would be to buy a new printer, as i won't be paying, and the lexmark was a freebie i got with my laptop, i was going to gofor a laser, but i don't think the rest of my family could do without colour, so I found this HP:

it seems pretty cheap for a printer with built in print server (something i definately wanted) and new cartridges are quite cheap, just £25 for a set compared to around £40 for my lexmark, and reviews seem to say they last a long time, estimated around 800pages black, 450 colour, what do you tihnk about that?
 
Hey, some of us have to work!

I'm not very enthusiastic about HP printers. I was glad when the last one I had made a grinding sound and expired. It was within warranty but I just wanted to see the back of it.

What I found really poor was that the HP had no print setting dialog between the print command and actual print. Even for printing the same document I have customized settings for the type of paper I'm using and how much ink I want to use (unimportant graphics printed at low contrast to save ink). Epson printers always have had that dialog. If you don't know what I'm talking about I can post a screenshot.

I assume you followed DCIScouts' advice and look at the printer sticky. You will have to do your own maths on how good the ink prices are.
