ok so my aunt wants to get a desktop to set up and leave back in the computer room, then the printer can be hooked to that and she could print from her laptop from the living room. Will that work???? She has a wireless router.

Yes, as long as the printer has a port on the back for an RJ-45 cord, otherwise known as a Cat5 Ethernet cord. Plug the cord into the printer, and the other end into wireless router. Have it turned on, and when she goes to print she was to "find"the printer on the network (the priner should just pop up on the network)

which would require you to have the desktop on whenever you want to use the printer.

yeah but its way cheaper than buying a network printer, or buying a print server.

true, unless the printer is prepackaged with an ethernet port, which many are these days.
do the printer and the router have a fixed spot already. or is it cool to move them around the house to wherever. if you get a network printer, or a print server built in with a router, then your printer basically has to be within 6-10 feet of the router. if the printer needs to be in the back room with the desktop computer, and the wireless router needs to be somewhere else in the house for connectivity issues (signal strength), then you'd need to leave your pc on with the printer shared. you've got a couple of options here. depends where you want/need to have the hardware.
No they're not. Network printers are completely separate animals, and they are a lot more expensive. I know. I have two of them sitting right behind me, and a regular laser sitting right beside me, with the multifunction on the other side.
I also sell hardware, including printers. You can't tell me that most of them come with NICs in them, because they don't.
