Private Hard Drive Content

Did you kow that when you delete a file from a hard drive, it is not actually being deleted but hidden untill the space is needed for another file(s). This means that deleted files can be easily recovered. For example if you have some thing illegal or explitic on your hard drive then it can be recovered by polic. However such recovery programs are not only available to the police. They can be downloaded by anyone. So if you have accidently deleted files or whatever. They can be deleted. If you are someone who is getting worried now, software is also available to make the deleted files unrecoverable.

I prefer eraser. Once a website recorded what i did on the internet, before i knew about adware and spyware, then tried selling me evidence eraser, making out that my family and friends would find out what i had looked at. Any company who will sell itself like that isn't one i like.

did you know that the goverment uses a huge magnate to delete all their data? I read that in this months PC world mag. b/c they were breaking the myth of a magnet erasing data on drives. i forgot what they rated the myth out of 5, but magnets will only erase data from drives if it's strong enough to pull the ion things in your blood...

I think the government uses electro magnets to wipe drives. I have also heard that freezing the hard drive and smashing it with a hammer is another method for destroying sensitive data. As for wiping hard drives, the old DOD standard was over writing a file 3 times with random data. Usually 1s or 0s and sometimes with Hex Values. Also when you move a file to the recycle bin it only removes the first three characters of the file name then places the file in the recycle bin. The only way to securely delete a file is obtain a program that will over write a file at least 3 three times with random data. I think the DOD standard now is to over write the file at least 8 times with random data.

Well in any case, you can set it to wipe and rewipe as many times as you want ... say.... 25 times.

Yeah, U know if your house is ever been raided what is going to be the fastest way though. Software takes ages. Magnets, could be a little tricky.

LOL yeah it's not that bad really... crunch out a post in 15 seconds, move on to the next one. Some of them when i really put effort into them can be 15 minute long posts but end up approaching 10000characters. You should see my email counts .... now approaching 300 legit emails/hour ... i answer most of them but sometimes it gets a tad overwhelming hehe

I should image they also smelt their disks as leaving them just blank is still a security risk.

For erasing files I would suggest to use Eraser 5.7 and for erasing entire disks then use DBAN using no less than 4 PRNG rounds. I would also take care in choosing your product because any company that boast's of their software using the "NSA standard" wiping is just telling little white lies. Why? Because it simply does not exist.

Eraser: www.heidi.ie
DBAN: http://dban.sourceforge.net/

Most of us here don't really need to have this software to erase files because we are hopefully all legit and aren't doing anything we shouldn't.

Have a read of this if you like http://v4.livegate.net/wipe/

If you really paraniod then you should use full disk encryption or use linux.

i don't agree that they do, unless it's proven. That would be really easy to find and break open to get information! another argument with that, is space...that would be a massive space just to put their smented harddrives.
