i just built my computer about a week ago and its my first build. So far so good. everythings fine on it and its very fast. But when i go to burn a cd. it tells me add a burner and restart windows media player. Why isnt it recognizing my burner? is there a driver or something i have to download? I have a lite-on. 25$ dvd/cd-rw. and i can play music just cant burn music.

try it somewhere else

try the burner somewhere else to see if it works
or install nero and see if it will pick it up
if all this does not work then go to where you bought it and let them to try it themselves they may have cheated you

It could also be it is not compatible. i had a computer and i tried to install a Sony DVD burner. did not work. (i forget the problem but i think it was similar) i called the computer people they tole be it was Sony i should call, called Sony they told me it was the computer people... this went on about 5 times before they told me it was not compatible.

It could also be the operating system. You can't just install an CD-RW drive on an windows 98 computer and drag and drop files and expect it to write. You have to have XP or Vista...

When you said they said it was incompatiable do you mean that your cmoputer didnt meet the system requirements? I have an DVD burner on my old computer (166MHz) with no probs before.

If you are using Windows XP

In "My Computer" right click on the CD drive and go to "Properties", a window should pop up and there are about 4 tabs near the top of the window, go to the one that's something like "CD recording" and there should be a option to enable recording on that drive.

Hope that help. :) I just fixed a problem doing this today. :D

i have vista. tried the properties thing and it doesnt have what your talking about on XP. and i cant figure out how to format a cd?? and i bought it from newegg so i cant really go there. and the drive did not come with anything to install the drive. it just came with the actual drive wrapped in plastic. thats all. so i really never loaded anything on my computer for the drive.

i did not ask but, it did meet all the requirements, it was only about a year old. Sony just said that they do not suport compaq. (it stincks... i liked that burner. it was fancy :P)

also. i think i know. Vista likes to format there cd's before anythign. this is a nice feature so you can just place files and it writes it to the disk. i think i got this error if you (i think) use the cd's with out rw on them (no they are not the re-write it is just a small logo saying you can add more data later on) or you use the wrong cd type. (at least i think there is a cd+ and a cd- dont rembore use dvd all the time now. :P)
