problem after downloading upgrade from microsoft

Hello all , first time user of this forum. Wonder if anybody at all can help with the following/ or if anyone else has experienced this please respond.

Have windows XP installed on my laptop, only had it 14 months. Went on upgrades section of microsoft website on saturday 6th Aug at approx 16.00 hrs. The site had been updated since the last time I had used this facility and stated that it had to scan the computer to verify the microsoft software before it let us add the jpgrade/search for available upgrades. after this, it came up one available upgrade to do with outlook express. I duly made this upgrade with no problems but since this, have been unablt to reboot the computer.

I have tried everything I can think of to rectify this problem and am now stuck- what next? short of completley wiping the harddisk and starting from scratch (which I am loathed to do) I don't think I can fix this - please help! I have detailed below what I have already done in case this helps anyone......thank-u in advance!

I have managed to start up the laptop in safe mode and run through all the steps inthe help and support section from the start up menu, basically nothing it suggested helped. I alse tried to use the last known good configuration, and went back the last 2 dates to beginning july, (before upgrade made) this also made no difference. and I have unplugged all external hardware in case this was to do with the problem (eg.modem & printer) hence I am emailing from work. Sorry such a long message but wanted to put everything which may help some computer genius out there!

yes, have ran through virus check (Norton) and it comes up with no viruses/spyware detected. I can only think that it must be something to do with the windows upgrade

that could be a possibly. maybe someone else can think of another option. but since you rolled it back it should undo the service pack 2 doesnt it?

not sure what you mean (sorry to be a bit thick)...when I tried to use last known good configuration, the laptop still wouldnt boot up correctly, only in safe mode. have you come across any other problem with this particular upgrade? i thought it was good practice to check windows for upgrades regularly, but wish I hadn't now

Have you tried completely getting rid of Outlook Express (which I'm a fan of anyway ;)), and reinstalling it without that update? Hopefully that should rectify the problem, unless that file is used by more programs than just OE...

how do I go about just removing OE? also, as the laptop was bought new, all of the software was preinstalled. It sounds like a good idea in principle to just get rid of OE (I don't use it anyhow) although would windows run ok without it?

Yes, in fact OE is a very convenient back door for viruses, and various other things to come in through your e-mail. OE opens the e-mail and all attachments without scanning the attachment, so if there's a virus, bingo! you've just won the screw your computer over game!!! Anyway, back on topic, I beleive that it is listed under the Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel. Go in there and remove it...

Ok i have done some looking into this and it doesn't appear to be that easy as add/remove programs this is what i came accross and hope that this helps!

Remove Outlook Express

it will be harder to remove since it is bundled in with the Win XP installation disk and is not an option for instaling, but i am not to sure so if you want to go this route then here you go!!!!!!!!
 good luck

if you realy think that it is worth trying, then I'll have a go in removing it...although I have never used it to email out or to access any messages. Perhaps is's just coincidence and the fault has absolutley nothing to do with the upgrade, but i was sure it would be something to do with it.......I guess I was hoping you guys had come across other problems with this particular upgrade and there was a really easy way to put things right! I'll definatley log back on later on tonight with the specific error message to see if that sheds any light on the matter....thanks though for all feedback

I myself have not had any MS update problems, what i suggest in the future if you are going to up date, only update the programs that you use. since you never use OE anyways it is pointless to update!

also do you have System Restore turned on and if so try that, i have found that system restore has saved me a couple of times where "load last known configuration" (in system start up) has not.

P.S. thanks for the heads up on the OE update thats one i wont be doing!

Hi sorry for the delay. Basically what happened was as follows.
Have got sony Vaio laptop, had it 14 months. Went onto the windows homepage to update computer. as I said before the site needed to scan the computer to verfiy/validate the software on the computer. the only update it found was the recent updtae of outlook version 2003 latest update,i think something about a spam filter, anyway
it was the only one it found. once this had downloaded, it asked for the computer to be restarted. I shut the computer down, and when I turned it on to restart, it would not boot up.

Exactly what happens....well the screen comes up pretty much as normal, with the windows Xp page. It appears to load up for a few moments then it freezes screen and the only was to describe it is that it crashes.......I turned the computer off, then when I turned it on again, a black screen comes up with text on the screen, the message is as follows:

'We apologise for the inconvenience but windows did not start sucessfully. A recent hardware or software change may have caused this.

If your computer stopped responding, restarted unextpectedly or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders chose last known good configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked.

If a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the power/reset button was pressed, or if you aren't sure what caused the problem chose start windows normally.
safe mode
safe mode with networking
safe mode with command prompt
last known good configuration
start windows normally

Use the up and down arrows keys to move the highlight of your choice@

if you go to start in safe mode the next screen comes up full of text lines, all the same, reading:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisc(0)portion(1)\windows\system32nrdrivers
couldnt wirte down rest of line as text dissapeared and safe mode started up.

Do you think somehow the update has embedded something by altering the registry? or something that the computer now does not recognise the files?
I am well stuck.....hope all this makes sence to someone out there. ps computer junkie, i tried to system restore too, but this had not made any difference.
