Problem i had during my new build

When I put everything together and powered up it would not boot. The memory error light on my mobo was on and all my components were on. But that was it , would just stay like that. Then I found out that I put to much thermal paste on my cpu so I fixed that while
I was benching everything with one ram stick. This time tho when I powered up everything would spin/turn on and then die, but if I held down the power on the mobo it would powerup everything but when I let go everything turned off again. So I thought it may be my Psu I replaced and same thing then I switch my ram stick to c1 slot and all of a sudden it was acepted and the memory light turned off . Then I added my two other rams and everything was good, boot susseful, so wat was the problem was it just the placement of the ram? It took me two days to get this thing running.
 
The motherboard is an asus p6x58d extreme. There's no onboard graphics on it . I been thru the manual a bunch of times and its says nothing about doing what I did all it says is for tripple channel ram use a1 b1 c1 slots. I don't get why I would have to install one ram stick at a time starting with c1 slot, I just hope my mobo is not defective. I've had my pc up and running for one night so far and everything seems fine right now.
