Problem Installing a Second HD Using WinXp

I have a 40gig HD (Master) on my home PC. A few months ago I installed a second HD (60gig Slave) just for extra storage space and everything
worked fine after I installed it. It was a very simple installation. Since then I removed it and now I'm trying to put it back in and now when I do and go
into my CMOS settings where your HD's, CD ROM, etc. show up, the HD isn't detected, in fact none of the other peripherals show up. I'll then disconnect
the HD I'm trying to install and then everything else will show up again. What's up with this? Could my HD be bad or I'm doing something wrong? I didn't do
anything different installing it then I did before.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
 
on the back of the hdd there is a jumper (little plastic plug over some of the pins), you have to make sure its in the right place for the hdd to be slave if you look on the top of the hdd there is a diagram showing were to put it for slave ,master ,cable select.
 
OK... I know what your talking about. It's a little plastic square that fits over the pins. My master HD does not have a jumper. Is that because it is the master? Bear with me here..... I'm learning slow but sure. :rolleyes:
 
I think if the master doesn't have a jumper it is supposed to be a single drive, so you gotta get a jumper to make that a master and your 60gig a slave
 
Not all drives are the same, yours should have a sticker or a stamped label on it that tell you what jumper setting does what.
 
Have you tried taking the jumper out of the second one and setting both of the drives in your bios to "auto"? As it should detect the HDD with the boot sector and set that automatically as the primary drive. If not then try putting the jumper on the first and leaving the second jumper"less", setting only that one to auto. If all else fails, get a jumper for the other and have both set to the correct settings. Are these both running on the primary IDE slot or one on each?

Could you elaborate on this as I'm a tad confused, what with peripherals being the monitor, keyboard, mouse etc. and not components located internally. Do you mean things such as the cd/dvd drives and not peripherals? As I believe things such as USB sticks, joypads (which too are peripherals) aren't detected and usable until after POST.

Also, try a different cable (IDE), or swapping them around, and reseat (take them out and put them back in) them. Just to be on the safe side.

OK... peripherals isn't the right word. My primary HDD, CD/DVD, etc. These do not show up when I connect my 60gig HDD. I'll try your suggestions and try swapping the IDE cables.
