Problem installing McAfee

Hello all. I get free anti-virus (McAfee) through my ISP. I tried updating the version without deleting the old one. After installing the new version and rebooting, I got an error and it would not run. I went and uninstalled both the old and new version and tried again. Now I can not even get it to install. It downloads everything but fails at the install part. I don't get an error message though so I do not know why it will not install. It just tells me to reboot and try again. Any ideas on what I can do to fix this?

Thank you.

DUMP IT! McAfee has a poor track record to start iwth. If you are looking for an effective antivirus tool the AVG 7.5 is one to consider. You are going to have to manually remove the folders and entries in the system registry to get rid of it that way with the help of a free registry cleaner like RegCleaner found at http://www.majorgeeks.com/RegCleaner_d460.html

AVG 7.5 and Grisoft's replacement for Ewido an antiadware/spyware tool can both be found at http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5#avg-anti-spyware-free

Is there any difference between the pay version of AVG and its free version?

I can imagine there would be some extra features seen in a full retail version including additional network security. The free version is intended more for personal home use. You can even download the 30trial versions at http://www.grisoft.com/doc/31/us/crp/0 For the free version version used regularly here simply go to the other link. That will also see periodic updates.

McAfee was tried here as well as Norton system works before coming across AVG some years back. And that's about where those twp are going to stay. When having AVG totally disabled it suddenly came to life one day when a trojan was copied to the drive upon reaching an odd site during a search. AVG pointed out right where the "uninvited guest" was located for manual removal at that time. You'll see more HiJack This logs posted where McAfee or Norton are seen.

Thank you. I was never able to get McAfee to reinstall right so I just went with the free AVG.

A few other good ones that you can go with are Spyware Terminator and Ad-Aware SE Personal if you can still find the last one. The Ad-Aware 2007 beta is being run at the present time here seeing problems on Vista while running good on the two 32bit versions of XP. The Spyware Terminator is also a freeware like AVG and Ad-Aware alike and is found at http://www.spywareterminator.com/

Fortunately snapfiles.com still has the Ad-Aware 6.0 version at http://www.snapfiles.com/get/adaware.html
