problem logging in / starting up xp

here lately, for some reason, my computer has been starting up really slow. on the black screen before it gets to the log in screen it seems to freeze. more so lately though, it is getting to the log in screen, i type in my password, hit enter, and it acts like it is taking forever...but its not doing anything. i dont think it is frozen because i can still move my mouse around, but it just wont do anything. this is very annoying. the only way to get around it is to hold in the button on my pc until it turns off and to try again. every now and then, i can hit f5 on startup and tell it to 'boot with most recent settings that worked' but today, that didnt even work. i am getting really fed up with this problem and need some help. anything you guys cuold do to help me out would be greatly appreciated.
 
i dont want to reformat because i havnt gotten all of my files transferred to the other hd yet. theres got to be a way besides reformatting

plus i dont have a recovery disk or the xp disk
 
If you can get the system running in safe mode the first thing is removing anything new along with both video and sound drivers. A bad install of a new program or driver set will see Windows stall. The msconfig utility is another idea with the disable all option selected in the startup group until you can isolate the offending item.
 
o. ok here are a few things that should help. try taking everything off your desktop and put it in your documents or somewhere. run spyware and virus scans. clean up your computer. (start, all programs, accessories, disk clean up) and run defrag. (start, all programs, accessories, defragment) also get rid of all un needed programs
 
alright, well nothing i've tried has worked so far. idk how to remove the drivers like PCeye mentioned. only one thing thats worked so far. i disconnected my new hard drive, then hit f5 on startup and tell it to 'boot with most recent settings that worked.' i need this drive to be hooked up when im on the comp. i cant keep doing this. if i can get things to work long enough, im going to move everything over to the new drive and format my C drive. anyone else have any other ideas???
 
So you are seeing this after installing a new drive then. Is that an ide drive or sata model you added in? If you added a second ide drive the jumper settings may have to changed. Often the secon drive on the middle connector has to be set to cable select. And even some rare occasions setting both to CS seems to be the answer. Either that of the new drive is bad and needs replacement as one possibility with it pulling the other down?
 
Your situation sounds more like a software problem if the new drive is already partitioned and formatted. There are a good number of things that can keep Windows from loading. If nothing sees results booting up in safe mode if you can get that far and remove some recent installations the option to use the system restore tool prior to a repair install can be done from the Safe Mode/CommandPrompt Only option seen in the F8 menu. At the dos looking prompt simply type in
%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe to manually start the restore feeature and bring Windows back provided you have restore points available. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304449

For the last item on the list the method for performing an "Install to Repair Windows" is outlined in the article seen at http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm This method preserves all files and folders with the possible need for reinstalling video and sound drivers. You don't have to reinstall all of your programs over again. A regular full install will delete the current copy for installation of a fresh copy of Windows. That would be the absolute last resort since the repair install option would be advised.
