problem switching from VGA to HDMI

I have both VGA and HDMI ports on my computer. When I switch from VGA to HDMI in my monitor menu all the icons disappear. I have an Asus VE248Q monitor and an Asus P8Z77-V Pro/Thunderbolt motherboard (using onboard video) running Windows 7 64-bit OS. I tried rebooting but that doesn't help.
What do I do to bring back the icons?

The HDMI port is allotted for the expansion graphics card. The VGA is allotted to the onboard video card. There's your problem. Now to go about switching those two, I have no idea. I had the same problem a year or so ago.

Hi bmigga,
Thanks for the reply. However I should point out that my son has the same motherboard (using onboard video) with another monitor that has both VGA and DVI ports. He has both connected and, using the monitor menu, he can switch from one to the other.
