problem with DVD-RW drive

I have 2 different DVD-RW drives, one that came with the computer and the other I installed myself, it is a Sony DRU-810A. I am having problems with the Sony.

Whenever I put a blank DVD+R dvd in, tried 3 different brands, I can not open it through my computer. It says insert a blank cd or something like that. And every once in a while when I push the button to open it, it tries to open but doesn't. I can hear it try to open but doesn't. I have to push the button again to open it.

The other drive works fine. Just trying to figure out what is going on. I have to tried to update the driver for it but it couldn't find a better match. Seems like I always have trouble with drives and recording stuff to them. It's just frustrating.

First of all you can't opne any blank media up with nothing already on it. You can't see what isn't already there. Once you start burning files to removable optical disks you then can browse them like you would even a blank formatted floppy. If you are trying to browse the disk and press the button to open the tray the system is still busy trying to read a blank disk. This is why you have to wait for those extra seconds before trying to open the drive. That is typical with Sony and other makes as well.

If I put a blank dvd in the other drive, I can open it. But if I try to open the Sony drive with a blank dvd in by double clicking the drive icon, it says E: (the Sony drive) is not accessible, incorrect fuction. But if I put in a blank DVD+RW, it will open. It just doesn't say how much space there is on the dvd. Isn't it supposed to?

Whenever I push the button to open the drive, it is not busy.

When I use nero 7 to put something on it, for the recording speed it only shows 2x when I use the other drive it shows 16x.

Which one does which speed? And what are the actual speeds of the drives?
Could you be using media that the drive doesn't like(have you tried other brand of media)?

When I try to use the Sony drive, it only shows 2x speed in nero but the other drive that came with the computer shows either 16x or 8x depending on which brand I use. Using the Nero infotool, it shows 16x read speed and 8x write speed for the Sony drive.

I have tried three different brands, Memorex(8x and 16x), Sony 16x and Maxell 8x. They all do the same thing. But for some reason, DVD+RW's work fine in the Sony drive.

Starforce is a terrible copy protection method that in some versions, has the side effect of causing degredation of optical drive performance.
You could try googling for the Starforce removal tool, run it, and see if that changes anything

You can't always go by the drive speed indication when burning to any blank cd or dvd since the fast speed is not the actual burn speed. The type of burn will see different speeds while the max speed is when reading from and not writing to blank media. At least you can use dvd-rws in your model Sony that was the second one up from the 530a model here. Yet both dvd-rs and +rs alike see no problems.

They rarely go at the highest speed they say, try some speed tools like nero's drive speed and you will see. For my drive which reads cds at a maximum of 52X, it only reaches that in the final seconds.

When burning vcds or backups onto cd-rs the Sony cd writer that is a 52x24x52 speed drive will see well under the 24x burn speed as the general rule. The data dvds made on the burner here will also see less then the 16x speed which is also the max speed. Seeing 9x+ is generally good.
