I have a p4 with a 160GB hard drive with winxp. I want to install an old hard drive from my old computer to my new computer as a secondary drive. I want to copy the files off the computer before formatting it. When i install the hard drive, the computer does not detect anything on my computer and windows does not load. my harddrive and cd/dvd drive don't work until i take out the old harddrive. I already changed the jumper settings on both the drives to master and slave. I also don't have a floppy drive to boot from.
Can someone please help me?

Thanks

Try setting both the HDD jumpers to Cable Select. Make sure your master drive in on the end plug of the IDE cable and the old one is on the middle plug.

I had a similar problem. With out being there, and seeing the bios, its really hard. Try to find somewhere that you can go into. For example, By me, when i go to the boot sequence, I am able to choose to devices. When i added a HDD, my computer too THAT oneover the one I already had. So I was able to (i the boot squence menu) enter another boot squence menu, 'cept here it let me choose which HDD was to be the primary one. I set the one I had in before, and viola, it worked. That's the best I can do.
