Problem with Internet Connection

greetings,
my relative is running win xp home on a downstairs computer (wifes computer) that gets it's net connection through a router. the computers in his house are NOT networked together and are using high speed internet.

...he advises that he cannot get on the internet with the computer whatsoever. what i advised him to do is to get the router out of the equation and hook the computer directly up to the cable modem and reboot all. no dice and no internet connection.

...while i don't think that it is the net card (although a possibility) and for sure it is not the cat 5 cable, that leaves a configuration problem w/in the computer. he is disabled and cannot walk so, i have to try and get this right the first time so he can get assistance from his wife to do whatever is necessary to get up and running (so-to-speak). where should he start looking and is there a "program" that would/could repair his internet connection?...ANY help or speculation will be appreciated!...as always, thanks again!

If he is connected directly to the modem and he rebooted the modem and then turn the computer on like you said this should have worked.

in the case where it didnt work i would verify that no static ip is set on the computer and also I would run network setup wizard and select connect to the internet option.

Also, check device managr to see if the LAN has been disabled or if there are any marks next to it, ie exclamation point, question mark, etc. If for some reason it's disabled, right click on it and slect "enable".
