Problem With Mouse... Caused By ???

Well, I really have no clue what caused this problem, and the problem is not persistent. Let me explain....

Some days, I will boot up the computer, with a USB or a PS2 mouse plugged in (tried both) and the computer will not boot. It sits there with the harddrive light on and I don't even get a motherboard screen. I don't even know if this problem is related to the mouse, but I am not sure.
Note: An hour later I could come back, and without changing the mouse, or anything, it will boot fine...

Now, on to the mouse problem, which personally I think is related to problem #1. I will be in windows on those nice days that the computer decides to boot, and after having the computer running for like an hour (this has happened in as short as five minutes), the mouse will shut off, and then I reboot (switching the mouse ext... does nothing), and now it dosen't boot.

Any ideas???

I need help with this, very badly, it is important that I get this computer back up and running. It's not the data on the hard drive I am worried about or anything, all thats on an external hard drive, its just the fact that I need this computer to work.

Any help is apreciated, thanks,

Note: I can supply any additional information that you want. This is the computer in my signature by the way....

Ok, we all know that I couldn't sit here and wait for you guys to come up with a solution, so, I pulled out the cmos battery (or whatever its called :D ) for a minute or two, and poped it back in. Now I have the computer in Windows, let's see how long this one will last.

Note: PS2 mouse attatced right now...

Not even five minutes, it's out. Screensaver kicked in while I was in the kitchen, and the mouse stopped working. Now when I start, it just sits there with a black screen, and the hard drive light on solid, yet, I cannot hear the hard drive going.

I have to get this going :(

*EDIT* - lol, you posted like 30 secs before i did

well, any update, is it still running....?? immediate reaction to the symptoms you describe is a motherboard fault, but lets see how it unfolds, update???

Unless I'm reading wrong you asked for an update 1 minute after he posted ;).

I agree it sounds like a fault with the motherboard. I'm going to ask anyway have you installed your chipset drivers?

Edit: it seems that you edited it that just after my read... I refreashed the page to see if another post was added yet (there was not) I then copy pasted your post without reading again... Editing is a double edged blade :).

Oh my LOL... This is out of control :)..

Yes I'd first try and update chipset drivers. If no luck then perhaps update the bios and then chipset drivers. Of course if you have had the computer for awhile and it was fine.. Then there is somthing else going on here. Perhaps a fresh instal of windows if trouble shooting is not your thing.

Whoa everyone is posting at the same time.
lol

anyways, i have such an unorganized workspace that i couldn't find any other ddr ram laying around, so i just took one stick out. now we are running on 256. its going ok so far, but like i said, lets see how long this lasts...

And, i really dont want to format, because, i can't find my xp cd, so i will troubleshoot :)

EDIT: yay, 256 ram is fun, 30 hours to load :)

Windows is STILL starting, this could take a while... anyways, it seems fine now, mouse is moving and all. If it was the ram, i know that i do have more laying around here somewhere. It will take a while to find thought :D

Well over 6 minutes to load windows :P I don't know how i ever lived with 256 ram before  Its very slow :P

I am going to go back to the kitchen and let the screen saver kick on ext and come back in about 5 minutes, and i'll see where i stand... hopefully well

Well, it's still running. Everything looks okay, and slow. :( Does this mean I should go buy some more ram (great chance to upgrade :D).

EDIT: I decided to throw the other 256 stick back in for the heck of it and see what happens. NOW ITS RUNNING ON 512 EXACTLY HOW IT WAS BEFORE, BUT EVERYTHING IS FINE!!!

I am so confused

ANOTHER NEW THOUGHT: Could some sort of USB device, such as a printer or scanner be causing this???

wow, thats a lot of posts for one person, lol. right, perhaps the RAM was just seated wrongly, and taking it out and back in sorted it.... and yes, a USB device like a printer or scanenr can cause all sorts of problems if it goes wrong, ive never had one do what your describing but it IS FEESABLE.

And seriously, 6mins to oad windows, ym god, i hope your exaggerating i really do, thats outrageous. if you do upgrade, which i strongly suggest you do, i think you should be looking at at least 1Gb PC3200. Some nice quality OCz or Crucial Ballistix.....

Nope, 6 minutes to load windows. Thats past the login screen. Including getting there it was 8 minutes. lol

It is 512MB OCz right now 3200.
Everything seems good now..... I'm on the internet with it now. Hope this lasts.

EDIT: Well now i'm sitting back at my desk with this computer i've been having problems with for 3 days now. I am on the internet with it :D This is great! Well, I will probabally upgrade ram anyways, but first, video card needs upgrade. 32MB onboard is killing me, lol.

you might want to start a new thread in the RAM section for your proposed RAM upgrade, will get more posts in there. glad to hear its working, seems it was the RAM, probably seated badly or got a hair on one of the contacts or soemthign stupid like that....
