problem with my laptop

Hey all,

I have a dell inspiron 1501 and yesterday it decided to crap out on me. The problem is it wont go past the windows loading bars. I decided to try and reformat the HDD, which went fine, but now it takes forever to load, just seems to hang there after I've booted.

Could it be the HDD went fubar or is there something corrupt with windows?

It has vista home basic on it, 80 gb hdd, i think fujisti.
 
Tried reinstalling XP and it installed fine but when I go to boot it says A disk read error occurred. Im starting to feel the HD died out, but that wouldnt make sense since windows installed just fine.
 
ohh, I meant to put "a disk error has occurred", it doesnt have a floppy.

Also I ran chkdisk and it said it found and corrected some problems but still getting the same message.
