Problem with Netbook

Hi, I just purchase an Acer one netbook about two weeks ago. It worked fine for about a week then the window xp started taking a looooooong time
booting up. I searched the control panel to see if I had anything download
twice. Everything was ok, but to be on the safe side I deleted the few programs I did download. It still took a long time. I try the Acer recovery software. The program tooks so long come on I gave up. Can someone please help me?

good/bad

Without having more details, this sounds like a virus problem. A few general questions if you don't mind.

Exactly what type of Acer do you have, is it the "Acer - Aspire One" notebook?

Did you buy it new or used?

Do you have anti-virus software? E.G. Norton, AVG, Trend-Micro, Avast, etc...

What software have you installed since you got the computer? (List it even if you've already uninstalled it; just say which is which.)

Where did you get the software you installed? From: online, a friend, a store, etc...?

Have you physically damaged your computer in the time you've had it? Maybe it got dropped or banged around in a move?

I have an Acer Aspire One netbook. I bought it new at Hsn.com. I think I have Mcafee's antivirus software. I'm not sure. I'm still waiting for window to boot up, so I can check.
I installed some of the software that came with the computer. Budget Express, Cook'n With Betty Crocker, DT4PC Morpheus Photo Animation Suite, WebPlus X2 Website Maker. I uninstalled all of them. No, I haven't dropped it.

Ok good

Ok, sounds good so far. You havent installed anything I would call "suspicious or dangerous" like limewire or bittorrent.

You bought the computer from HSN. Though HSN isn't the best place to buy a computer, that cant be changed now so lets move on. It was good to know where you got it and that its new. It makes it easier while trying to walk someone through fixing things.

*When, as best as you can remember, did your computer start to do this? 3 days ago, 4 days, a week and 2 days? Try to be sure of this.

I'm wondering exactly how and/or when its taking a long time to get into windows.

*First, how does your computer turn on:

1. Does your computer go from the boot-up screen=> to a screen where you type a password to log in =>and THEN to your desktop...

2. Or does it just go from the boot-up screen right to loading your desktop?

*Second:

Where in the startup procedure does it slow down?
1. When the computer boots-up.
2. At the login screen (if you have one).
3. When loading your windows desktop.

*Third:

Is there anything you have saved on your computer, since the problem started, that you cannot do without?

I would say the problem started 4 days ago. When the computer comes on, it goes from the boot up screen to the little icon by my name. I clicked on the icon, then it comes on and goes to my desktop. The computer slow up when Window XP comes on. Sometimes it stays on window for two hours. Sometimes it doesn't come on at all. It just stays on Window XP. I have to turned the computer off with the power button. Last night I went
to safe mode I did a quick scan for virus. I didn't find anything. I was able to use the Acer recovery, but it still doing the same thing.

Lets continue...

Were going to try and fix your computer now. Its great to hear that you ran an anti-virus scan and didn't find anything.

And since it sounds like you can get into safe mode (and know how to), we are going to go there again for this fix.

Lets begin:

1. Turn on computer and go to "safe mode"

2. Got to the RUN command on the start menu. Its right above the log off/shut down buttons.

3. Open RUN, then type (without quotes): "chkdsk /r"

Note the space between "chkdsk and the forward slash (/), the space has to be there.

4. Agree to run it by pressing "Y"

5. Now restart your computer normally. The checkdisk program should find and repair any problems with your Hard-Disk-Drive (HDD).

NOTE: When the computer restarts, do not press any keys. Allow Check Disk to find/fix any errors.

Let me know how that goes.

Next

I'm going to move on with this, and assume that Check-Disk finally finished. Just so ya know, I'm about to be on the road for the next 3 hours. So if I dont respond in awhile, thats why.

OK,

For these next steps you have to log in normally. I'm hoping that you can log in still. I know you said it takes a long time, but it will eventually load your desktop, right?

(If you cannot load your desktop at all, see the bottom of this post. *)

*Next we will be using CCleaner ([EDIT]but not in safe mode) to clean your computer and try and fix any registry problems.

Start your computer normally that way we can run this program and have it work correctly.

Then do to following:

We are going to install CCleaner, This is their home page,
http://www.ccleaner.com/

This is a great tool that many people use to fix, clean, maintain their computers. I will also give you a direct link to the download here:

http://www.ccleaner.com/download/downloading

After it downloads, just click the file and go through the install. Yes it is an .exe but its free of malicious intents, so no worries there. Just "ok" everything throughout the install.

Now:
1. Once you have finished the install and the program opens, its a simple matter of getting started.

2. Go to the "Cleaner" tab and press the "Analyze" button at the bottom.

3. Once its finished analyzing, click the "Run Cleaner" button.

4. Then go to the "Registry" tab. And click "Scan for Issues", once that is done it will ask you if you want to backup your registry. Do so now. Name this file so you know exactly what it is, then save the file in a place you can find.

I name my backup files things like: "KEEP, CCleaner registry backup" (without the quotes, of course)

5. Once you finish with the Registry scan, close CCleaner. But don't shut-down windows! We have more to do, see below.

--------
Once we are finished with CCleaner we can move on to the next step.

We are going to give you Malwarebytes-Antimalware. Its a great program that works as a malicious program removal tool. In short it eliminates the harmful stuff your antivirus scan may miss.

Lets get started!

1. Lets download the program, here is their homepage:

http://www.malwarebytes.org/

and here is a direct link to their free download, just click the "Download Now" button and save it. Yes this is also an .exe, but this file is safe:

http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebyt...4572.html?part=dl-10804572&subj=dl&tag=button

2. once its installed open the program and click the "Update" tab. The click for it to update.

3. When its finished updating, go to the "Scanner" tab. Then click the "Perform Full Scan" bubble, then click the "Scan" button. Just so ya know, It may take awhile to scan.

4. Once it finishes scanning it will tell you, then it will show what it found presented in a report.

IMPORTANT: Save this report somewhere you can find it. You will need to post the log to this forum.

Now, restart computer normally and see if things are better.

If things are better, your done!

===================================================

* If you cannot load your desktop at all!, continued from top of post.
If you can not get your desktop to load at all then here is what we need to try.

1. Turn on your computer, Tap F8 and enter safe mode.

2. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore.

3. On the Welcome screen, click "Restore my computer to an earlier time", and then click "Next".

4. On the Select a Restore Point page, select the date from the calendar that shows the point you'd like to restore to and then click "Next".

Note: The calendar can be flipped back to previous, weeks/months by using the arrow buttons on the calendar.

In your case I would recommend you go back to whenever you are absolutely sure your computer was working correctly.

5. On the Confirm Restore Point Selection page, verify that the correct restore point is chosen, and then close any open programs.

6. Click Next if you are ready to proceed or click Back to change the restore point.

7. The computer will shut down automatically and reboot. On reboot, you'll see the Restoration Complete page, and then click OK.

Note This:
After reviewing the stability of your system, you can choose another restore point or undo this restoration. Just open System Restore and make the appropriate choice. After you use System Restore, you'll have an additional task, Undo my last restoration, on the System Restore Welcome page. Remember that you'll have to reinstall any programs that were installed after the restore point.

If System Restore doesn't work in Normal Mode, it might work in Safe Mode. To use System Restore in Safe Mode, press the F8 key during reboot and choose Safe Mode. When your computer starts in either Safe Mode or Normal Mode, System Restore can be used to capture a working previous state. System Restore can't be opened unless the system is bootable into one of these modes.

(Though most of this information was all mine, some information was from Microsoft. [<http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/getstarted/ballew_03may19.mspx>. "Windows XP System Restore Is Easy to Use". Ballew, Joli. 10/2/2009.]

Oh, oh. I forgot to put the space in it. I turn it off and try again in the safe mode. Now it has
windows disk partiton all over the screen and it seem to be stuck. I suck at
computers. I'm afraid to turned it off again.

I think you are talking about the CheckDisk screen (as stated to do above)
You just need to wait until it finishes, your computer will likely automatically restart by itself

Thank you. I got back on ten minutes ago, and I am now performing a full scan
with malwarebytes software. You guys are the best! I hope this fix the problem.
The software had found 10 object infect, and it still running.

Hey mercy, sorry to detract, but have you plugged in an external drive or anything recently? Even a flash drive? And then did you shut down with it and then try to reboot?

Hearing

Well it sounds good so far.

There is only one program download step left. The next download will be for "HijackThis" from Trend-Micro, an anti-virus software company. Its a program that lists nearly everything on your system, like registry entries, running programs, file settings and more. Its a great program that I have used many times. It can help us to see if there are problems with your computer that other programs cannot see or fix.

For now, follow the rest of the steps till you finish with Malwarebytes then restart your computer normally and tell us how it works.

Sorry I took so long to answer. My internet on my desktop has been acting up. I finally got At&t on the phone, and they fix the problem. That ok, Vizy. No, I haven't installed an external drive.
I did buy a flash drive, but I never got chance to use it. Gamblingman, it's still coming on to slow. It takes three or four hours, and sometime it doesn't come on at all. Sometimes the screen goes black and know matter how many times I touched the keyboard it want come back on. The only time the netbook boot up is when I haven't tried it all day.

Sounds like you are infected really bad...what I would do...

1. Take your Windows disk you received with the computer and do a fresh install of the complete operating system.

2. Install all drives from the driver CD

3. Download AVG Free antivirus and install

4. Plug it into the internet and run "Windows Update" and completely update all Windows files.

I think you write, Scout. I know when I ran the malwarebytes program it found 13 infected. The program fix most of the problems but not all. I don't have a cd. The Acer recovery is built in.
I did reinstalled the operating sytem, but I had to do it in safe mode, because it wouldn't
start in normal windows. I'll download the Avg today that is if I'm able to get on it.

that is if I'm able to get on it.

Wow...that sucks:(

I am curious as to how you got so infected? In all my years of messing with computers I have only had a few small minor infections. Nothing even on the same level as that. At that point...it's not even worth trying to save:(

I'd do a complete re install and then install AVG first thing.

wondering

I am wondering the exact same thing. How did you get so infected, if I might ask, where are you going online?

Are you using limewire??? If you are, my advice would be to never use it again. Limewire is like dunking your computer in nuclear waste, its bad.

The Acer Recovery partition is available before going to Safe Mode, actually before even Windows starts
How exactly are you running this "Recovery"?

I think I have Mcafee's antivirus software. I'm not sure.
Was Mcafee included in your Recovery image?
If so then you cannot install AVG, as then you would have two Antiviruses installed, which will conflict with each other.
You can run the Mcafee Removal tool (if you haven't done the "Recovery" yet)

Oh, I just worked out - Are you talking about System Restore ? (which can be accessed in Safe Mode
If so, then I would recommend not to run this. As you were infected its likely System Restore is also likely infected

Before installing AVG, I think you better letting us know where you are at (still with Windows installed? Or have you done a full clean recovery?, or System Restore?)

If your Windows is still running and you have successfully removed Mcafee, before installing another antivirus, please download and run > Combofix
Combofix will scan your system and then provide a log at the end of the scan
Save the log (I usually save to Desktop)
Then create a new reply and attach the log, using the attach button >
attach.gif
On the new reply toolbar

I know very little about computers. I don't even know what limwire is. I did try to get on the internet, using my wireless connection. It was unsecured, but I was only on it for five minutes. Could I have gotten a virus that quickly? kimsland, I do have Mcafee,
and I will try your suggestions tomorow. I have done a full system restore. I'm thinking of sending this computer back where it came from.

It can be repaired/Fixed/Cleaned by us here on the forum
You just need to reply with what you have done, and provide the logs when requested (basically just follow instructions ;))

Limewire is a horrible File Sharing program
Please note: Whilst trying to clean out all Malwares on your computer, make sure to disable or uninstall (preferably) any File Sharing programs.
