Problem with new build

Hey everyone,

Yesterday, I put my computer together, and my brother installed Windows XP on it for me.. However, he told me that it was 'wierd because it was like the computer didn't see the hard drive sometimes'. It worked fine for a while, but then my brother copied something, and when I came in my room I restarted the computer as it said - an error occured in the copying, but all I can remember is something about a 'kernel' and 'dumping physical memory'.

Anyway, I formatted the HDD today, but couldn't install Windows - it crashed, and sometimes when I turn on the PC and go into BIOS nothing appears in the 'SATA Master' section.

Furthermore, now I cannot even get onto the Windows setup at all - it says 'NTLDR is missing press ctrl alt del to restart'.

So I'm not too pleased with it right now.. :D

I have an Asus A8N-SLI SE motherboard, and a Seagate Barracude 160gb HD.

Any problems you can think that might be causing this, and what I can do to solve it would be much appreciated..

Thanks!

I've had similar to the same problem with a Seagate Barracuda 40GB HD and Windows XP installed on a Dell Optiplex. What I did was format the hard drive in FAT32 file system rather than NTFS. It seemed to solve the problem. If the FAT32 file system works fine for a while than try converting it into NTFS. You do this by opening command prompt and type: "Convert C: NTFS" w/o the apostrophes (replace C: if your drive is a different letter).

Oh, right..
I tried doing that, but it only lets me have a NTFS file system.
I just tried to format it, and it says it was unable to format the partition...

Im actually having the same problem on a Asus M2n board.

only lets me have a NTFS file system.
