problem with new computer

Hey guys, first post here. i am having a problem with my new computer i built and figured you guys could help =P. My problem is when i start doing anything like go online/open any app/or simply leave it run for a few minutes it will flash to one color and stay there. then i have to reboot and same thing happends. i had trouble with this while installing both xp/win7 (simply b/c i couldnt see..) and finally got lucky. also i picked up the mobo and hdd on craigslist, the rest from newegg. any info would be helpful!


my specs are
Msi nf750-g55
phenom II x2 555BE
ocz obsidian 4gb(2x2) ddr3 1600
thermaltake 450 watt psu
WD 1tb hdd

Sounds to me like your graphics are shot? Or perhaps the cord or monitor is bad? Do you have another cord and monitor to test with?

Well the graphics are onboard, and since im not sure of this mobos condition since its from craigslist, i figured it could be the criminal. also i tested the 2 monitors that i currently use and still the same problem. and thank you, i kind of jumped right into this post! hah

Yeah I would guess it is the mobo since it is craigslist and therefore isn't new. Do you have some old graphics card you could take out of some older computer to try? But that makes the most since for the mobo to be broken.
 
i see. well i don't have any pci-e graphics cards on hand but i do intern at a small computer shop(forgot to mention that), tomorrow ill see if i can borrow one to test with.
 
So i put a pcie card in today at work and ran a video test, came back 30 minutes later and it was running fine. guess it was the onboard.. now i have to decide to either get a beast graphics card or replace mobo..
 
hehe. thatd be if this mobo wasnt am3/sli rdy with my phenom II x2 and ddr3 :).. going to buy a zotac 9800gt 1gb this week hopefully it works out okay.
 
zotac 9800 gt 1gb/256bit/gdd3 card on the way, ill keep you guys posted on how it goes when i install

what power supply do you have in there?

It is all well and good getting a video card, but useless if it will but too much stress on your PSU and make it blow, or if the unit can't even give the whole system enough power in the first place
 
i got a 450 watt thermaltake. And the zotac doesnt require a pcie connector, so i guess it has a fairly low power consumption.
 
Okay! so, i got the card today and put it in, win7 got the drivers for me and ran blur+starcraft II, they ran perfect and nothings gone wrong. this thread is finished as is my tower. thanks for all the help guys, really appreciate it.

I would uninstall the drivers and install the latest ones from the nVidia website (not the beta ones)
