Problem with saving passwords!!!

HI!

Does anyone know what would cause this? On our Windows XP machine no matter how many times I enter a password or ID into a form and ask to save...it never does!

What could cause this??

Hi richedie,

I assume that you mean forms on websites? If that is the case then you need to have a look at your browser security options.

In Firefox it's in Tools-->Options-->Security
In Internet Explorer it's in Tools-->Internet Options-->Content-->Autocomplete Settings

Hrmmm... what browser are you using? Are cookies enabled? If not, you'll have to enable them.

After hours of messing around with RegEdit + Yahoo Messenger + Microsoft’s Virtual PC I’ve found the problem and a solution to why apps like Msn Messenger suddenly can’t remember their passwords anymore.

When Yahoo toolbar gets installed it sets the following registry value:

[HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-796845957-926492609-725345543-1003\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders]
AppData = %AppData%

The problem here is AppData should actually be the following

AppData = %USERPROFILE%\Application Data

So when MSN or other apps that use that registry key go to save their data it gets lost.

So the solution is simple, run regedit and go to

[HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-796845957-926492609-725345543-1003\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders]

and set the value AppData to a data value of %USERPROFILE%\Application Data

[edit] Also - do you have any toolbars installed? I've read several threads that claim some toolbars and the removal thereof can cause this problem.

Tools-->Internet Options-->Privacy tab--> move slider all the way down to "Accept All Cookies"

If it's already set that way, then please try downloading Mozilla Firefox and try saving passwords for sites in that browser. That way we can find out if the issue is with your browser or with your OS.

It sbeen a while since adjusting cookies in a browser so I missed where that was located in the new IE8. Thanks, mine was set to Medium. Will dropping to Allow All cause security risks?

I tried Mazilla last year and it slowed down my PC.

You can read at length about cookies on any number of websites, including http://www.cookiecentral.com

I don't think it will be an issue - I would turn them off if you're going to use your computer on a public wifi network like Burger King or something...

Mozilla Firefox will definitely not slow down your computer - it's simply a web browser just like Internet Explorer - if you don't have it open, it doesn't have any processes that run in the background. It's my browser of choice. But if you're happy with IE8, I see no reason why you should transfer.

I had the problem of system not saving by ID or password. I went to "Control Panel" and uninstalled the Yahoo Toolbar and the problem was solved.

Thanks guys! We'll see what the Cookies setting does for us. This is a home use desktop PC so I should be OK.

On the Firefox......I meant that searching the web became painfully slow so I went back to IE8.

In Add/Remove I see some apps I am unfamiliar with:
Browser Defender
Malwarebyte's Ant-Malware
Unity We Player
 
Those are all legitimate programs. The first two are malware detection and removal programs and the last is a media player. If you don't use them I would uninstall them. I would recommend hanging on to Malwarebyte's Antimalware though - it's a good program. You ought to run it and see if it picks up any malware.
 
Thanks, I don't recall installing these apps though.....

Just rebooted and still passwords are not retained! I might reimage this PC!
 
Well, you could do that I guess... seems a little drastic.

I would install another browser such as Opera or Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox just as a test to see whether the problem is with IE8 or with the OS.

If you're able to retain passwords in another browser, then we know the problem must be with IE8 and we can look into that further. If you are not able to save passwords in the other browsers, then we know that you have some other issues, and you may need to try a fix such as the one in my second post.

However, if you want to reformat/reinstall the machine, be my guest. It's the simplest fix for any problem, but doing the data backup can take some time.
 
Maybe I'll try another browser to see.....because this is frustrating! Everytime I log off, reboot or close a window...I lose the save ID/password for Comcast Webmail or anything for that matter!
