Problem with Screen

I am trying to help a friend out and wanted to check with you guys before I jump to what I think is wrong with his computer.

When starting up, his computer makes it through the loading screen and to the windows desktop... then the screen turns black. Power is still on the monitor and computer but no output to the screen. You can turn the monitor off for a few seconds and then back on and it will show the screen for a brief moment then back off again.

I tested his monitor on a second computer and it works just fine.

I am thinking it is a bad video card but not sure.

It is a Dell Dimension 2400 and it is stock with no upgrades. The computer is only used for email and web surfing.

It has integrated Intel 3D Extreme Graphics and a 200 watt power supply.

Any suggestions on a easy, cheap fix? Can a video card be added to the system without replacing the 200w power supply?

Thanks for the help!

Yes you can add a low power cheap PCI videocard, one with around 128mb of memory would be good.

if you ever need to replace that board with something other than a dell dimension 2400 board then a new case is needed.

It would need a PCI correct... not a PCI express card?

Boot to safe mode and see if the screen stays on. If so, then its a driver issue. I've seen this happen a few times.
