Problem with SLOW TRANSFER SPEEDs

For years, I have been having consistent download/upload speeds of 340KB/80KB and file transfer speeds (over wired connection between my 3 desktops) of just under 10MBps.

Now with my laptop, the transfer speed (in to or out of the laptop) is only around 1.5MBps, while the internet speeds are not affected at all (340/80).

What is affecting my laptop file transfer speed (which isn't affecting the laptop's internet speed) but not my desktops' file transfer speed?

My router is WRT54GL (wireless-G) and I have WPA2 encryption on the LAN.

(My laptop has XP installed; I have another SL410 i bought at the same time which has Win 7 installed; it has the same problem; excellent internet speed; but transfer speed is only 1/6 of that of the desktops (1.5MBps)

How do I check what is wrong? Thanks.

(also, if the laptop is connected over the ethernet cable, the file transfer speeds are totally normal = 10MBps).

How far are you from the router when testing these speeds? Distance effects how fast you can transfer data when it comes to wireless networks.

What laptop is this? If it's an older model, the WiFi adapted might only be capable of wireless-B speeds (11MBps), which could explain the slower transfer rates but unaffected internet since the internet is nowhere fast enough to saturate the connection.

Thanks for the quick replies.

But hey guys, I am using all my desktops and laptops in this tiny apartment. So the distance from the router would be about 10 feet direct. Shouldn't be a problem there; right?

And I got the SL410 (LENOVO) laptops. And about the saturation you talk about.......I am only getting speeds of 1.5 MBps. A speed close to 10 MBps would make me very happy (that is the speed that I am getting on my desktops and laptops via the ethernet cable).

What kind of testing can I do to find where the problem lies?

p.s. Btw, I have WPA 2 encryption
