hello, im hoping someone can help me with this its been driving me crazy. i recently wiped my computer clean and reinstalled windows 98 and all the drivers. im using a smc network card so windows 98 already had the drivers for it. so i checked the device manager and everything checked out. there were no question marks over any of the devices. so i went to plug in my network cable and my computer did not detect a network connection. i tried clicking on internet explorer and i get a dns error. i ran ipconfig and got the computers ip address. so i ran ping with the computer ip address and it came back with successful results. i also ran loopback and that came back ok too. but when i ran ping yahoo.com i got the message destination host unreachable. now before i reformatted the computer it did detect a network connection and it connected to the internet. so im not sure if im missing some software or if my network adapter is not config right. thanks for any responses in advance

what you'll want to do is check to see (when you run an ipconfig command) that (i'm assuming you're using DHCP) your dhcp device is giving your computer the correct ip address in addition to that you'll need to make sure that the default gateway ip address and dns servers are both set to the ip of your router otherwise you won't be able to connect to the internet.

i ran ipconfig/all and i got two different sets of info. the first i got was:

windows 98 ip config
its gives my hostname
DNS server- it has nothing next to that
node type- broadcast
and then a couple other entries
Next it has:
the name of my network card
ip address-169.254.240.197
subnet mask-255.255.0.0
default gateway-there is nothing there
DHCP server-255.255.255.255
and thats what i got so hopefully this will shed some light on something thanks again

in addition the ip address im getting is a 169 which i think means the card is getting no outside connection. also what i think is wierd is when i plug the cable into the card my computer does not detect any conncetion and there are no connections listed.one of the lights on the card stays orange the whole time and the other one stays green. when i look in the device manager everything checks out. could it be im missing a driver or some software. thanks in adance

have you tried setting static ip address for your computer? make sure you fill in the defualt gateway as your routers ip as well as the default dns server as your router.

im pretty sure i did...but if you dont mind could you post exactly how i can find my routers ip address and then how to put that in to the gateway and dns server. i have windows 98. do you think it could be a problem with software. because like i said before it gives my computer a 169 ip address which i read means its not communicating with the outside internet.also when i plug the network cable in the card my computer doesnt detect that i plugged in a network connection. i dont know if this means anything but i used to have windows 2000 on this computer and it worked but now i wiped the hard drive clean and reinstalled windows 98 and the device manager shows that all the devices work well so i dont know. sorry for all the info i just feel like ive tried everything and im ready to go out and by a new network card. well thanks for all the help so far and if you have any ideas please let me know thanks

thanks

hey, well i tired the program and it still didnt work. so i went to network under controll panel and i went to add adapter and i found that my computer had 2 different drivers for the nic card that i had. so i installed both and then i did an ipconfig release and renew and clicked on internet explorer and it worked so im thinking maybe it was a combination of all those things. so thanks alot for all your help. i appreciate it so much. i was fixing this computer for my mother in law so she will be very happy as well..i just have once more question for you. i have the computer at my house right now and i hooked it up to the internet here. when i bring it back to her house will i have to do a ipconfic release and renew again or can i just hook in the cable and will it run..she has dsl and i have cable. both of our conncetions are directly from the router that the company gave us directly to our computers. so i guess what im asking is when i take to her house can i just plug the computer in and it will connect to the internet or will i have to reconfigure the network card. thanks again in advance

sorry one more thing

sorry i know im being annoying now but i just wanted to ask you one last thing. i forgot to mention that the internet does work but on some web pages and it says that it opened the page but with some errors. this came up on aol and msn but i tried yahoo and yahoo came up perfect. i mean its doesnt effect anything the webpages still come up and i can do stuff on them but it just says that at the bottom left corner. i was just wondering if thats something that i have to worry about or is it just because im running such an old version of internet explorer. ok that it i promise. thanks for all your help again.

ok, you should be able to plug it in and have it take right off (as long as you're not running static ip addresses, which i highly doubt) also you're going to get those errors because you're running win 98 which probably doesn't even have internet explorer 6 therefor some of the content that doesn't support previous versions of internet explorer won't work. I'm not sure if it's still available but you could try getting internet explorer 6 from somewhere. Anyway thats why it's doing that though.

thanks again

ok cool i figured i could just plug it right in. and i dont think ill worry about ie because it still seems to work. but anyway thanks again i really appreciate all your help i think i actually learned something from this experience.
