Problem with Updates!

Hi, I recently had a problem with my video drivers not loading when I restarted my machine. This was after attempting an install of XP Pro. A repair install of XP Home solved this problem but, as you will be aware, once you do a repair all of the updates done to the OS are gone.

I reinstalled all of the updates (about 75) but when I did this my computer began responding in a bad way. When I tried to open Internet Explorer it another created a shortcut on desktop instead of opening. I could open it through the start menu but i could only get my homepage. When I try to go to anotehr page it just stops responding. Windows Media Player is very slow at responding. I tried to change names of songs and it froze and I got the non-responsive message. Please help!

I'm sorry, I dont quite get the first part of your post. What was the first thing that happened? What happened during the installation of XP Pro since you said that you attempted to install it?

I think your OS may be in a bad shape due to that attempted installation and repair.

Could you explain the details better? Thanks

Originally I tried to upgrade to XP Pro but during the installation a message appeared saying it could not install particular files & that my OS may not work properly. Not wanting to risk it, I aborted the install and elected to keep XP Home. When my computer started backup my video drivers failed to start with the machine. Once I uninstalled them and reinstalled them they worked fine. Trouble was once I turned the machine on and off again they went back to the original state. I was recommended to do a repair install which fixed the video driver problem but created this new one with my updates.

I have problems with internet explorer and windows media player when i install these updates and will probably have trouble with other things i aint discovered yet. i create a restoration point to go back to. Im worried that without these updates my computer will be vulnerable to attack. There will be new updates coming out all the time aswell so my system will be falling further behind.

Your OS might be damaged due to that process. Is your XP Pro CD Original? I've encountered that problem too, "could not install particular files" the problem was that the XP Pro CD was damaged, I borrowed another XP CD for my installation and then it went fine.

I would recommend that you do a reformat and try to borrow or change the XP CD for the installation since you wanted to upgrade to Pro on the first place. If you cant, just use your XP home cd for the fresh installation. I recommend this since it will be the easiest solution, cause I think that you're really serious about the updates and having a fresh installation would likely solve the problem.

It's just the matter of the OS being damaged and not functioning well.
