Problem with USB storage device

Recently I bought a new external HDD and wanted to move files from an older one. Everything went fine for the most part but at some point they were files which couldn't be moved or even copied.
I thought there was bad clusters even tho I actually can use these files (mp3s for instance) but today I bought a USB SD card adaptator and the same thing happened. I can use the files or copy new files to it but I cannot move or copy from it. Also it seems to shut down when I do that (the light goes off until I plug it back in). The external HDD won't shut down since it's not powered by the computer.
Don't know if it helps but the OS is Win 7 Pro.

Any idea what's going on and how to troubleshoot that ?

Check the questionable hard disk. Check by clicking start, and then clicking computer. Right-click the hard disk drive that you want to check, and then click Properties. Click the Tools tab, and then, under Error-checking, click Check Now. To automatically repair problems with files and folders that the scan detects, select Automatically fix file system errors. To perform a thorough disk check, select Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. You may select both.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that both devices work fine on other computers so the problem is more likely to be either on the mobo side or on the OS's.
