Problem with Wireless USB Network Adapter

I purchased this wireless network adapter: model F5D8053 from Belkin and can not get the thing to work reliably. I have experienced hours at night where it works just fine but other times cuts out after about 3 or 4 minutes. At times during the day it's fine while others it won't stay connected and no amount of moving around the adapter seems to help much. There seems to be no rhyme or reason, really frustrating. I've removed and reinstalled several times now and nothing seems to be working. For $75 I expected a little more from Belkin.

To make things stranger, it seems to cut out--as if overworked--when I have two or more browsers open (due to lag in one or the other). Can the browsers be causing an issue, or is it more likely that the adapter's connection cutting out is causing the browsers to freeze up? Or could it just be a conflict problem? I don't know the tech side of them that well so I couldn't say.

Any suggestions? I'm using XP Essentials. If you need any more information just ask.

I have never had much luck with USB wireless. Wireless can be a pain now adays. I remeber back in the old days when no one had wireless and if you did all there was was 802.11b. Now everyone has wireless and there are toys burglar alarms ..etc...the airwaves are full. Try this download I think it has a signal strenth meter

is this for a notebook or desktop
if for a notebook..doesn't it have built in wireless.
I know if it is a desktop it is kinda a pain...i would move your pc right next to your wireless device and still see if it improves or is the same...if it improves you might need a signal strength booster..no the exact term I mean.
 
john - I honestly don't know. At work it's fine, where the router's right there close. At home, I'd say about 1/4 mile. I don't know if it's supposed to pick up that far or if I'm getting the signal from a neighbor. I know I go from about 20 mbps at work to 2-4 mbps tops at home. I'm on an unsecure network so who really knows.

I highly doubt you are connecting to a wireless network a 1/4 mile away. You are probably connecting to someone else's network that is much closer to you. A wireless usb network adapter won't go that far. You need to get your own internet.
 
How far is it designed to go? Is this not a type of wi-fi connection? The problem here is that the thing is not working correctly. Even if it's picking up a closer network, shouldn't I be getting better than 2 mbps?
 
The weaker the signal the slower the connection. And just because it says 2mbps doesn't mean thats what your speed is.
 
Okay, I've downloaded the netstumbler, but can't figure out what it's for/how to work it. The tutorial isn't much help, and I'm afraid I might mess something up. How do you use this program, and what is it supposed to do for my connection?

I'd do a proper google search for the answer, but I'm afraid with the connection cutting out like this, it would take all day. Thanks
 
I'm not familiar with that software. And I highly doubt any software is gonna make your connection better.
