problematic Cd drives

Not so long ago i unplugged a CD drive on mypc in order to use another HD. There were originally 2, but i never used the oneso i unplugged it, then unplugging the second was only meant to be temporary.

I tried plugging one of the CD drives back in, and it was fine, but then i had to re-unplug it.

Now, whenever i try and plug either CD drive in, windows will start, then day that it;s found a new device, then a second bubble will come up saying 'CD DRVIE' but then my pc goes 100% slow. The only thing that seems to resolve this is unplugging the CD drive. (Neither CD drive will work). I don't think it makes any differene, but i've tried changin the pin at the bac (setting it to master and then slave) but it still won;t work.

Also, i'm only using 1 HD at the minute (don't know if hat makes any difference either)

Is there anything i can do sort this out, cos i can;t install anything from cd's now :(

Thanks for any help

Sounds like musical IDE channels. If your pc is half as confused as I am, you are lucky it even boots up!

At the moment you have one hdd and you are trying to connect either of the cd drives. Please just try one cd drive at a time, don't try connecting both for now.

Which ribbon cable are you attaching the drive to? The one the hdd is on, or the one that is apparently connected to/doing nothing?

One thing you could try is slaving both drives one at a time to the hard drive with the jumper on either the slave or cable select position. If one or both works try a new cable on the secondary. There you could assign one as master and slave or run both with the cable select. You either had the jumper settings reversed or are dealing with a bad cable.
