Problems from noob

Just as my name says, I suck with computers but I am having a problem and people at another forum, non-computer focused, didn't really help or don't respond quick enough. I am just going to copy and paste it here to save time.

Anyone good with computers?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've had a Dell Dimension 2400 for a few years now, and recently got a Compaq Laptop from WalMart.

My problems are that when I want to go on the internet, I put in the ethernet cord into the slot but it said "limited or no connectivity" and I don't know what to do about that.

Also I got a USB 2.0 File Transfer Cable so I could get all my stuff off the old computer to the new but neither of the computers seem to be able to detect the cord after I plug it in. I have no problems when I use the USB connectors for my MP3 player and camera.

Anyone have any ideas why these eletronics hate me and how I can make them work?

For the interent modem, the info on the thing the cable plugs into saya Motorola SB5100 SURFboard Cable Modem, and it has 100Mbps, thats all I know. How do you reboot a modem?

Know you all know that I am really bad with computers.

I'm f**king angry right now because I got the internet to work on the laptop but it only in 2 out of 25,000 times I tried it. While I was using the explorer it still said "limited or no conectivity" then after a while the explorer just stops working again. So I figure it went from "limited" to none. It also went out in the middle of updating the software, does that mean something? When I first had this problem, someone said if I just get the wireless card and etc. it would be solved, is this true? Or am I just missing some important software?

Those are the three replies I made to my thread, they tell the problem and progress I have been having. And the people already said the USB cable from the first reply would not work for what I wanted so can anyone tell me what it can be used for?

I also thank everyone for reading this thread and helping someone that has absolutely no computer knowledge.

What type of internet connection do you have there? dsl connected through a residential router? The message there usually has nothing to do with your system at all. This can happen at the router end of the cable you are using to connect with when it gets partially unplugged or unplugged and replugged back in where the router may have to recycled.

The other main problem can be solved often enough with a trip into the device manager. The fast way is to right click on the MyComputer icon and then click on "properties" at the bottom of the menu that comes up there. Afterwards you simply click on the hardware tab to open that section where you will see the device manager button.

When scrolling down through the items listed in the DManager go to "network adapters" and click on the plus"+" sign to open that up and look for anything with a yellow exclaimation mark next to it. Right click on any found and choose the update driver option to reinstall the needed driver provided for connecting through the router. That was provided by the service provider.

Thanks for the tip, but there was nothing with a yellow ! by it. Here's some info from the connection that I need I think may mean something:

There is no value under the network address.
Under the General tab it says "Location: PCI bus 5, device 0, function 0"
There's no Default Gateway, DNS Server, or WINS Server values.
Also the number of packets are under 100 sent on laptop but close to 50000 on the dell.

Just a reminder the modem works perfect on the Dell but not at all on the laptop.

Try unplugging the modem for a couple seconds then plugging it back in when it's connected to the compaq. If you have a router, do the same with it. It works for me when my internet craps out on me.
