Problems Installing a new OS

I have a Dell Inspiron 3800 (rather old, I know) and it came with Windows ME preinstalled. Yea, I thought the same thing your probably thinking right now: "Windows ME... HAHAHAHAHA" - but I never had time to sit down and reinstall a new OS. So finally, about a year or 2 later, I decided to install Win2k Pro, now we get to the problems. When it's installing (I don't know at which point) it stops, and just hangs there for hours. Finally I was able to install it, but now whenever it starts up, the machine freezes, and I can't do anything with it. So I try to reinstall Win2k Pro (It's probably not compatible maybe?) but again, it won't even install, it just hangs. Any suggestions?

Once you have tried that do you have any other os cd to try.

Maybe give memtest a try to test out your ram

Just copy the program's image to a floppy (using something like rawrite.exe or dd), reboot, and it starts testing.

There is a bootable CD with this tool and many, many other tools (e.g. aida) for repairing and testing PCs:

Well, I'm actually at work and brought it in, but forgot my floppy drive at home (The floppy and CD-ROM switch, they go into the same port). So I'll just burn the image to a disc. But thanks for the advice.

is this an external cd drive we are talking about. Do you not have an internal ide one to try?

the Dell Inspiron 3800 is a laptop apj, he has like an expansion slot kinda deal where he can plug in one drive at a time, either 3 1/2" or cd-rom. so not really an external drive

Yea, see, all I do all day at work is just go on forums and talk to people, here I try to help people with their problems, another one I just chat with people I've known for years, good shit. I'm an IT, so I just work on computers and help people when their machine is broken. I help the Network Admin.

NO DOUBT....Format and then install. I went through that same crap with Win Me on a Dell as well! Pain in the A*S! You will be well served to format.
