Problems installing DVD ROM drive

I decided to rob a DVD-ROM drive from my previous computer so I'd have both a ROM drive and a DVD burning drive. I disassembled the older computer, unplugged the drive, and then installed it the same way into my new Dell. At first it was freezing my computer every time I signed into my account on XP, but after switched the interface cable from the old computer to the new one, the new computer recognized the drive and it worked properly... for about 20 minutes. Now it's doing the same thing again.

The drive is a Toshiba SD-M1502. The new computer is running Windows XP Home Edition. I’m wondering if it’s the operating system that’s causing problems.

Are the jumper settings set right on the back on the drives?

Originally the jumper was set to CSEL. Last night I tried changing it to the SLAVE setting, but it did no good.

I could understand why those types of things would keep it from working correctly, but why would it cause my computer to completely lock up? Work and then stop working? That's what I'm perplexed by.

So just to confirm, You have only 1 master and 1 slave on the same ribbon right? Like a dvd and a cdrom? Mark the dvd as the master, and cd as slave.

The main DVD-RW drive that came with the computer didn't have a jumper at all, so I tried setting it to MASTER and the other to SLAVE, and I thought it was working (though the drive was having a hard time detecting discs), but once again it started freezing the computer...

Well, it is a problem with the drive. I bought a cheap DVD-ROM drive from Wal-Mart to test it and it's working great. I'm just mad I had to shell out money when I have a seemly functional drive right here!
