Problems installing Samsung Kies on desktop

Hi,

I have a Galaxy S2 and all day I've been trying to get it to talk to Kies on my PC. Samsung's Live Chat people can't help.

I'm running Windows XP and Service Pack 3 is installed. I've uninstalled and re-installed the device drivers through "Add/Remove Programs" twice today and I reboot the computer before trying to reconnect the phone. This morning I took the ultimate step and totally removed Kies and re-installed it this afternoon (I have since done one of the device driver uninstall/re-installs alluded to earlier).

The drivers are in "Add/Remove programs" but not in device driver.

USB debugging and bluetooth is disabled on the phone.

Can anyone help me, please?

Additional....when I plug the phone in, it initially recognizes the phone but a little while later it says there is a problem with the Hardware installation and some devices may not work properly.

The PC then continues to talk to the phone and then comes up and says the hardware is installed and ready to use.

Does anybody know what is going on?????
