Problems Powering up

Recently my computer just shut off for no reason. I tried taking it all apart and putting it back together to see if anything was loose but I couldn't see anything like that. I figured it was probably the power supply since it was rather old. I got the new one today and when I put it in and turned it on, it powered up for a few seconds and the shut down again. Now it won't power up until I unplug it then plug it back in and even then it's only for a few seconds. Anybody have any ideas what's wrong? Thanks.

By the symptons and the fact you changed you PSU, i would say that the first PSU belw itself up (due to age) and on its way it fried the mobo, the new PSU is working fine but the mobo is dead. Can you test it in a different system or get a firend to help you out.

I am assuming that the following is not the case (since the psu was old, im assuming the rest of the hardware is as well) but i had similiar symptoms when i put together a system that required the power line standard 24 pin(or however many) to be plugged in as well as a smaller 4 pin cord as well. When I didnt have the smaller 4 pin connected, it would boot for about 2 seconds and shut back off. I would say either your mobo is fried or somehow BIOS was deleted in your PSU's last glorious moments of life before erupting into an electrical chaotic explosion.

Alright. I looked at it and everything and couldn't figure out what the problem was and my parents figured it's time for upgrades so I ordered a new MB and new CPU with some new RAM. I put it all together with the new power supply and when I went to turn it on, the same thing happened. It powered up for a few seconds and shut off again. I took it apart and put it all back together and the second time i turned it on there was a loud noise and some smoke. I think the new power supply burned out somehow. I plugged a different power supply into it and the board shows that its getting power but still won't power up. I tried plugging in a different harddrive to see if it was the one on there causing problems but that didn't work either. Any other ideas?

Poor guy. Sounds to me like your original PSU fried, doing damage to your original motherboard. You put in the new PSU, and damaged it. So when you put your new motherboard and cpu, the damaged PSU killed your new components before self-destructing.
There are few things that can cascading failures. the PSU and motherboard are the only two I have experienced. I hope what I said isn't the case, but it is possible. I have had it happen to me.

Take the board out of the case, take out all the cards. Just leave the bare minimum. If you have a graphics card, even leave that out. There are ways to tell without a monitor if its POSTing.
With everything out of the case and just your cpu and ram installed, try turning it on then. There should be a beep to tell you it posted. If there isnt, you can also tell by your fans. When the system first powers up your fans will run at top speed, and just afterwards they will slow down some. With mine, they slow down to 83%.
If none of that works, try different ram, and a different cpu. Try to locate the bad parts.

I've stripped everything out and tried what you said, when I plug the power supply in the little green light on the motherboard lights up so I know that it's getting power. When I hit the power swith the CPU fan will twitch, it looks like it going to start but then stops moving. This is the case on both the old and new motherboards. Any ideas?

Could be the power supply, could be the motherboards. I can't say. When I had that problem, I was lucky enough to have 4 extra power supplies and 6 extra motherboards lying around, so it was no big deal for me to test it.
Try jump starting your psu. May be worth a shot. I can't find the link for the how-to, hopefully someone else here can give you that.
