Problems setting up Network with two OS Systems?

Hi,

I am trying to set up a network between two computers, one is a desk top which has windows 2000 on it, the other is a lap top with Win XP. All I want to do is to be able to store some files and videos on my desktop and connect through my lap top when I need them.

I am using a wireless router and each computer has a wireless connection and I gain the internet, but I cant get them to talk to each other. The wizard on XP tells me to put the USB in to get a key and to insert it into the other computer, but this does not work. Any ideas? If someone could give me a step by step guide or point me in the right direction I would appreciate it.

Thanks

Chris

Well, go to My Computer and right click on it.
  • Select "Properties" and click on the tab, "Computer Name".
  • Click on the button, "Change" next to, "To rename this computer or join a domain, click Change".
  • Now, under Member of : , click on the radio button, "Workgroup" and type a name of your choice.
  • Repeat the above steps for the next computer too.

Now click on "Apply" and exit.

Click on Start and hover your mouse on Settings and then on, "Network Connections".
  • Select, "Local Area Connection" and then single click on, "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and click on, "Properties".
  • Click on, "Use the following IP address" and then enter 192.168.0.1 in IP address and 255.255.255.0 as the Subnet mask.
  • Click on OK.

Leave the above settings on default on the other computer.
