Just after my computer has finished starting up(win 98 se) this box appears asking me if i want to install iexplore5 but can't because i already have the enhancements of it would i like to install anyway. Plz help.

One simple correction to this is to download Internet Explorer 6.0 which will install easily to upgrade IE there. Once you have the IE 6.0 Service Pack 1 you go into Control Panel and use the add/remove programs option to uninstall IE 5.0 in the Windows components section by unchecking IE there. Then you simply locate the updated IE and double click on it while in Windows Explorer to start the installer. From there you use the IE setup wizard to configure your internet connection along with basic and preferred settings.

Can you write down the exact message or even take a screenshot of the pop up. It's easier to diagnose a problem knowing the exact details.

98SE came with IE5 I believe, but this problem sounds like you have a newer IE5 or IE6 already there. Did you do an update from previous versions such as 95 or 98?

hey whts ur pc's configuration??????????
if possible try to upgrade your system... xp sp2 is better....
microsoft had stop production for win 95 98,98se in july 11 2006...
n they will provide support or application upgrade only for next one year...

n for instance install IE 6

When you see that again close those out and download IE 6 SP1 from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...cb-5e5d-48f5-b02b-20b602228de6&DisplayLang=en and save this version to a folder.

Once you have IE 6 saved on the drive go into the control panel and use the add/remove option to open that screen up. On the left column scroll down to the "Windows components" section and uncheck IE 5. This will see that version uninstalled. Then you simply double clock on the download through Windows Explorer to start the installation of IE 6. Once you have configured the wizard properly and can connect online you won't see this again. IE 6 will now become the default browser.

You may have to run a cleaner for the system registry after saving a fresh download of IE 6 and uninstalling the present installation of it. It sounds like a loose value there causing this. RegCleaner and even Microsoft's own RegClean are free tools for this.

RegCleaner can be downloaded from http://www.majorgeeks.com/RegCleaner_d460.html

RegClean is found at http://www.download.com/RegClean/3000-2094_4-881470.html?tag=pdp_prod

Once you have a fresh download of IE 6.0 saved give these a try to see what they find. RegCleaner and RegClean alike will run on 98 without compatibility problems with the older version of Windows. Apparently the installer left something behind there when you updated from IE 5.

Apparently something has suddenly started the IE installer like an orphan in the system registry. A run of RegCleaner could help a lot with this. The freeware even finds things right after a fresh install of XP and softwares.

Once you give RegCleaner a good run install a fresh copy of IE 6 to update Windows temporarily. Then use the add/remove Windows components section found in the add/remove programs in Control Panel to uninstall IE 6. Run a search for IEsetup.exe with the file search on the Start menu. If that is on the drive somewhere something may have started it up.

Does your internet explorer work at all? If it is working and you have no problems with it... From your screenshot, just check to not show the message anymore. It is just there telling you that you already have the most current version for your OS and you are trying to install an older version.

Additionally, you can try to repair it on 98se.
Got to:
Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System information
Click tools, then select "internet explorer repair tool."

98 could be touchy at times with the IE 6 upgrade. There have been a good number of write ups on the problems some see. Here's one response about IE 6 running into problems on a 98 machine some time back.

"2) I would not recommend running IE6 on Windows 98. There seem to be a lot of problems associated with IE6 running on Win95/98 systems. I'd recommend sticking to IE 5.5 on your machine." http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20020619.gtss2/BNStory/Technology/Troubleshooter

That is an older article to look at there for sure. But IE 6 is an old worn out browser for an OS no longer supported by Microsoft. What did they do? The latest IE 7 is geared for Vista for the most part. Only a few it seems have had good results with it on an XP system.

I would give the IE repair tool a try as computerhakk has recommended. Another thing you can look at are tips on the IE system registry values seen at http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/537/

IE5 came out in 1999, IE6 didnt come out till the same time XP did in late 2001!!

And how long was IE 5.5 out? Not long there. In computer time 5 years is a long, long time. The final release was in October of 2001 with SP 1 coming in late 2002. Two years went by to see SP2. But here's a good one back in January about SP3.

Windows XP SP3 release date moved to 2007

Bink.nu is reporting that Microsoft has moved its release date of Windows XP Service Pack 3 from the summer of 2006 to the second half of 2007. This news comes hot off of Microsoft's recent "accident" where it set the Mainstream Support expiration date on the XP Home product as January 1, 2007, and then suspiciously extended the deadline to 2008. Like the support deadline modification, the change to the XP SP3 date is also cagey." http://arstechnica.com/journals/microsoft.ars/2006/1/16/2537 Linux we go! :P

No No No, you said it was made for a unsupported worn out old OS, thats ME and back, IE6 came out with XP!!

You like to run around your mistakes, (YOU SAID) it was made for a worn out OS thats not supported anymore. So show me proof that IE6 was (made) for 95-ME? Your own dates proof you wrong! So your sayin that when microsoft came out with IE6 it was developed for 95-ME and not for 2000-XP!! Get real!

If you bother to read you will note the actual release date for IE 6 superceded XP by two months. Likewise IE 7 beta is already out and running on XP systems when there is no problems seen. Where is the finished version of Vista? That is only out at this time in the latest RC1 beta.

Where are you getting the 95-ME crap? IE 4.0 was used on 95. IE 5 came with 98. IE 5.5 proceeded 2000 originally along with the ME flop! XP was then rushed into the fall 2001 release. Why do you think there is no Fat64 OS? They simply grabbed a working NT model and updated that for XP. IE 6 is the one that has been used far longer then the prior versions.

I give up? You prove yourself wrong in your own answer! (YOU) said that (IE6 was developed for a old worn out unsupported OS), the unsupported OS when IE6 came was 95! 98-98se-ME and 2000 were already out when IE6 came out. It came out right before XP was on all XP cds. Its was backward compatible to 98-98se-ME but was not released for them!!

They are both outdated at this point. If you had IE 7 running like it seen on the latest RC1 release you would understand the "world of difference" as well as knowing that 98 no longer has any support from Microsoft.

At this point when ir came out no longer matters for david522. He is simply trying to get rid of the IE popup messages. I run the latest FireFox here on Windows along IE 7 on the RC1. There is a registry key that can be changed that will keep the messages themselves from coming up.
