Problems with 3D games

recently, 3D games (counter strike, GTA...etc) stop functioning properly on my computer. before this, i was able to play every single game properly so i know that there's nothing wrong with the hardware since i did not modify anything. now, whenever i play any 3D game, the game would stop responding for about 10 second then become active for 2 to 3 seconds before it stop responding again. im using windows XP SP2, my graphic card is Nvidia FX 5200 and i have 1gb of RAM. can anyone help me with this?
 
Hmm. Start bar<Run, type "dxdiag" without quotes. Display tab then "test direct3D" Get back to me on whether the tests were completed successfully.

Could be your card has pooped out too..
 
Are their any background processes hogging resources? You can find out by going to task manager when this problem is happening and looking at the processes tab.

Have you done a virus or spyware scan? These buggers can seriously slow a computer down.

It's still possible that your card is dying, but before we come to that conclusion make sure it's seated properly, that the fan is spinning, and that it's not overheating. You can check temperatures with any system information app, I prefer Pcwizard, Sisoft Sandra, or Everest.
 
it could a dying graphics card...my old geforce 4mx died 6 mos. ago....at first i was able to play age of empires III and call of duty...then it showed problems like the game would hang in the middle of the play or the computer would restart during gameplay...i run dxdiag and the card seems to run fine...after a few days it died..
 
A FX5200 is not really a gaming card lol, but I finished Doom 3 on it. So this happens only when you start a 3D game? Have you tried 3Dmark01SE to see if its really the card's fault. It sounds like a driver problem to me if it functions properly in 2D mode.

Definitely not an driver problem. I'm guessing its overheating? ;)

Pretty sure 3D programs make more heat than 2D programs :D

PS - Still playing Halo on my GeForce2 MX400 32MB AGP...
 
The FX5200 doesn't really generate that much heat, if you really want to use it I guess you can take the puny fan and heatsink off and sink a larger heatsink on with a 80mm fan blowing into it. :D:D:D But I really think its about time you upgraded into something with more grunt.
