problems with 7900GTX

I just installed an ASUS 7900GTX in my ASUS A8N-SLI Premium motherboard. i put it in booted up and installed the driver. it seemed to be fine. Everytime I open Windows XP Pro, a little message pops up in the bottom right hand corner saying something like SLI dual gpu has been turned off yada yada yada... What is this? Also, when I tried to play Unreal Tournament 2004 for the first time with this card, the computer froze. I had to reboot. I tried to play again and it worked until I tried to change the resolution from 800x600 to 1280x1024. When I tried that, it froze again. The only possible problem that I would think it could be is the power supply... it's a 400W Antec Smartpower. What's wrong? I would think that this card could handle this game at that resolution. Help please. Thanks

NOTE: For two GeForce 7900 GTX-based graphics cards running in NVIDIA SLI configurations, a minimum 500W system power supply (with 12V rating of 34A) is recommended. Visit www.slizone.com for more information.

So basically, your PSU ain't up for the job.

Oh, I got the impression. Don't know how though. :o

My guess would then be that the +12V rail used be your GPU isn't strong enough.

EDIT:

Found this,

A 400W PCI Express compliant system power supply (with 12V current rating of 26A or more).

Your PSU has +12V1 rated at 10A and +12V2 rated at 15A. So as I said before, but now in another circumstance, your PSU ain't up for the job.

so get a new psu and all will be good?
what psu ya'll recommend? i wanna stay away from antec

edit: oh yeah, so do you guys have any idea why that message pops up when i load windows?

question. i'm looking at power supplies and am wondering something. i see 2 12V rails on some of them. to get the total amperage output, you can add those together right? i dont know much about this subject.
 
Why stay away from Antec? They make good PSU's.

Yes, just add the amperage together. But you should know that one +12V rail is used for the processor and another one for peripherals.

because i hear for some strange reason that some antec psu's have compatibility issues with my motherboard.

does anyone have an explanation as to why when i boot up i get a message about multi gpu rendering being turned off?
 
HAHA same thing happens to me! weird.
do you have a SLI motherboard? i think thats why it does it for me... because i have a SLI motherboard and i dont use both slots.
 
yeh i have an sli motherboard. it seems like there would be some kind of way to disable that message. There's something i dont understand. unreal tournament plays fine at 800x600 but wont do anything if i switch to 1280x1024. i hope getting a new power supply helps.
