problems with 9600XT 256mb

its starting to happen more often... i was surfin the net and my screen just turn ed black and went into power saving mode, like if i was turning the computer off but left the screen on. it happens at least 5-6 times in a month. turns off anytime it likes. I have my case open so im hoping its not a overheating problem. btw this is my moms computer, the computer was getting all crusty with the old parts so i put more ram and this 9600XT 256mb

specs:
1.8GHz Pentium 4
1.5 gigabyte of ram
9600xt 256mb
60 gb harddrive
350W power supply
motherboard is some sort of old MSI board.

"getting all crusty" souonds like the case is a dust magnet and needs a good can or two of air cleaner to see it all cleaned up inside. You could easily have drivers giving you a wink on occasion. But you may want to look at the power options to see if the never setting is used on all or was left at the Windows default where disks turn off after 20min. of inactivity.
