Problems with CD and DVD drives

Hello,

I am having problems with both my drives. When no cds or dvds are in them, they come up as DVD-RW Drive D: and CD-RW drive L:. When I put a cd in and dvd in them, they change to CD Drive D: and CD Drive L:. Aside from this, I cannot write to either, it is so annoying.

The CD Drive is HL-DT-ST-CD-RW-GCE-8400GB and the DVD Drive is Empress DVDRW IDE 16X I think, well that's what it says in control panel.

Can somebody shed some light on this, is driving me crazy not being able to write to either. Bloody computers!!:mad:
 
I don't think the name change from DVD-RW when it is empty to CD when it has a disk inserted is a big deal.

But neither one of the drives will burn? What program are you using to burn disks? Also what OS are you running?
 
You need to use some software like Nero to burn discs.

I prefer Nero and it usually comes free with new computers (or burners), but it's not free as an add-on (though there are free trials I believe). Someone else may have another suggestion as to a good free burning application.
