Problems with desktop and taskbar

Windows XP SP2
Booting windows displays the starting screen, logo and finally the desktop off center, making the taskbar to disappear. About 30% of the desktop disappears at the bottom and about 10% to the right.
The screen resolution is properly adjusted and the computer works otherwise perfectly. Several activated system cleaning like virus/malware/Trojan programs show no infestation. Registry repair, defrag did not help. Neither did disk defrag or any further cleaning efforts.
As suggested at some help forums, I tried to use Ctrl Alt Del function to re-set explorer or explorer.exe, but this did not help.
Earlier, a restart automatically resolved the problem, but now it always starts with the problem.
Could it be a malfunctioning graphic card or something missing due to a cleaning process?
 
Does your monitor have a default settings menu to where it will set it back to factory defaults? Or an auto adjust button? Sounds like just your screen placement is just off.
 
I should have mentioned that this is a 10.1" laptop computer.
No, the monitor does not have a default value. Neither auto adjust.
The only adjustment possible is the resolution, but this is already the default.
Incidentally, I re-booted the set and again it started normally. The taskbar reappeared and the display is central. The mind boggles.
 
Thats my fault for not noticing. Make sure the resolution isn't out of range of the screen. Could be having issues the driver loading at bootup.
 
I had a lateral thought: The computer booted correctly. This gave me the the chance to move the task-bar to the top with the result that I can see it! The missing picture is less important now, as all other programs can be reduced in size so that they remain visible.

After that I connected the laptop to my digital TV by both sets displaying a picture. Surprisingly, the projected picture on the TV was full there, no missing bits, whereas the laptop displayed -as before- the reduced size. This fact gives food for thought, but in fact I am happy with the current solution, as this laptop is mainly used to project pictures on the TV set, which works fine. Many thanks for your help.
