Problems with Direct3D

i'm unable to run any 3D games such as GTA or Silent hill but 2D games are fine. when i try to run 3D games, the screen goes blank as if the computer is on standby unless i press alt-tab, which switch from the game to another running program. i did a dxdiag test. i get the same problem when the program tested with Direct3D 7 and 8 but it was okay with Direct3D 9.
here are my com specs:
Pentium 4
1Gb RAM
GeForce FX5500
Windows XP SP2

Reinstall latest drivers and DX9.
