Problems with mobo and case. HELP!

Ok here is the problem. I am using an Intel DP45SG mobo and this is a custom build just for information purposes. I have the components all put together inside the case and everything is plugged in like it should be. I push the power button and lights blink then go back off. I check all cables then try again and same thing happens. I then take everything apart and take the mobo out of the case. Then outside of the case I put everything back together and push the power button. VOILA! It works! I figured it all worked now so I put it all back into the case and push the power button...same as before. Everything just blinks and goes back off. I then take all the screws out of the mobo that fasten it to the case. With the mobo still in the case but not fastened I push the power button and BAM! It works! Is it possible that somehow the screws are making a short circuit on the mobo and won't allow the computer to boot up? Advice??
 
Yes, it's almost certain that's what's happening. You are using standoffs to mount the MB on. Correct?

No I am not currently using standoffs to mount the motherboard. Although the standoffs that I have appear to be some sort of metal so would they really make a difference?
 
The board is designed for a standoff at each mounting point. It will not short at the point where the standoff touches, but will short if any other metal part of the board touches the metal case.
 
You have to use those little standoff or else all the little solder joints will be touching the metal case. I wouldn't be surprised if you shorted something. If the Mobo doesn't work after, don't be surprised!

If you dont use them, it isnt going to work. Might have shorted the board already. They only go under the grounded holes on the board.

That's a risk you take when not using the standoffs. Why did you not "install" it the proper way in the first case ? I understand you use it for information purposes but still. Never rush things or take shortcuts when building computers.

He probably forgot or didn't know. Hopefully it'll be okay. :)
 
It works!! I've done practically everything with a computer but never changed or removed a motherboard so I didn't know there had to be standoffs underneath it. It makes sense though because without them all the solder points would be touching the case so they would all be connected to each other which would be where the shorting came into play. Thanks everyone for your help! I now feel like an idiot but hey...ya gotta learn somehow. Lol. Once again I installed standoffs underneath the mobo and everyhing now works perfectly!
