Problems with MSI 880G MoBo

I have a brand new MSI 880GM-P51 MoBo that am using to build a new computer with a SATA HD and a SATA CD/DVD. Problem is, the BIOS does not "see" the drives, but the funny thing is, it will detect the CD when you put a XP System disk in it and it will load it into the HD. Afterwards it will boot up regulary with XP from the HD. But when you check the BIOS, there are "NO SATA PERIPHIALS" detected. What gives? Why doesn't it detect the drives, but yet boots up from them?:confused:
 
You usually see this when running in either ahci or raid mode, is it? I had a board that did the same thing when running raid. I wouodnt worry about it as long as its working.
 
I did not know that I had a choice of ahci or raid modes in the BIOS. I just went into the BIOS and looked at things. What do I have to do to get out of it?
Anyway, there is something screwy going on, it will not "see" any IDE devices either. I am running Widows 7, but prefer XP. I have many programs that do not want to run on 7, the drivers are not available for it. So I tried to replace the SATA with an IDE drive with the intend to load XP in it. In that way I can keep 7 on the SATA drive, but it "blue screens" on me when I put in the IDE drives. BTW The IDE drive works in an other computer, so it is not it.
I wonder if there is something wrong with the MoBo.
Any ideas anyone?:confused:
 
Yes I did. As a matter of fact, I used several HDs alternately as Masters and Slaves, and all did the same. None were "read". At least with the SATA CD drives, it worked, I could put a CD in it and it would read it, with a IDE CD drive it would totally not work.
BTW The IDE equipment was tested on an other (working) computer, and they all worked.:confused:

if they are not working on this one, but working on others, your IDE port on the montherboard could be bad, or nonfunctional.
 
Update - As for the drives not showing up, johnb35 was right, it was the mode the MoBo was running in. I changed it to "IDE", and sure enough, the SATA drives showed up! (It was in the BIOS Advanced Features Menu). Thanks fellow! It actually did not make much difference, the computer was running OK anyway, but it makes me feel better to see the drives listed!
Also, I was finally able to "persuade" the software to boot up from the XP System Disk, and re-did everything, getting rid of 7. It is now running XP exclusively.
Now my LAN port does not work anymore, and I am unable to get on the Internet. Always something! Can hardly believe that it quit because of what I did, it must be coincidence!
Windows tells me that it can not find any hardware to initialize Internet connections, meaning to me that the hardware on the board does not work anymore! Or any suggestions?
 
Most likely you just need to install all required drivers. Look in the device manager for any entries still needing drivers, as xp doesn't have drivers for a lot of hardware.
 
Johnb35 - Never thought of that! You might be right, it might be that the driver is lacking. Will surely try that!
As you can gather, I am a newbe in assembling a computer from parts. Always bought them complete from the store, although I grew up with them and was into the design of some of the eary ones back in the late 70's and in the early 80's, and we had green-character monitors!

Update - You were right again johnb35! The drivers were missing, and I loaded them back in using the CD that came with the board. Everything is working again! Thanks!
