Problems with my microphone

Please take your time to read all of this, I would greatly appreciate it!

Lately I've been having a lot of problems with my microphone. When I try to talk to anyone on any chat program it comes out real slow and sounds very deep. At first I thought it may have been my microphone so I bought a decent $10 and it still made the same noise.

When I was offline I decided to test my microphone again hoping it would magically fix itself and it worked fine. I wasn't on any chat program and I was using the speakers and microphone sound check.

Happy about my latest success I went to celebrate by trying it out on Ventrilo, a program made solely for talking on a microphone. I started to talk to my friends but they told me to stop because it came out really slow again! I decided to get off Ventrilo and test it again and it worked! So I went on AOL Instant Messenger and tried it again thinking it may have just been the program I was using and it did the same thing.

I decided to test it while still on AOL and it came out distorted the same way so I exited it and it went back to normal. I would like to know if anyone else has gone through this problem or just know how to fix it. Please, I need help!

56K dial-up but I know for sure it's not my connection because I used to be able to talk to people on chat programs and my brother's used to talk on Team Speak all the time.

well my first guess is bandwidth, but if you say so then i'll believe you

do you have anyohter machine in the house (that can dial out on the same line) to test if the phenomina is recurrent

No, me and my brother's used to all the use the same 56K line but we got two more and now we all have our separate lines.

Oh, sorry. I misread your comment. I might be able to see if one of my brother's will do that but I don't think that could be the problem.
