Problems with recognising RAM

Having a problem upgrading my computer..

I just installed a 1Gb RAM stick but the computer thinks that it is a 256Mb stick.

The white label on the RAM reads 1GB PC4000 DDR.

BUT... In system properties it reads at just under 256Mb and I ran the Crucial System Scanner (on the Crucial Website) and that says 256MB.

:(

Any help would be appreciated.

Specs on the computer would be nice... Motherboard make, model, etc... My thought is it's too old to handle such RAM, but not knowing anything about the system, I can't say much.

The motherboard is a Winfast 760GXK8MC

Previously there were 2 256Mb sticks in there.

Manual states:

-Supports PC3200/2700/2100 memory

-Supports 128/256/512MB technology up to 2GB
