so i did a computer job for a friend and i normaly dont use sp3 for xp because i have always had problems when using it such as my wireless internet not working right, and certain programs like anti virus stop working. i noticed today that it wont let me instal avg, so i tried windows security essentials and avira, all sepratly of course, and they wont allow real time protection to be turned on, and when i install ad aware, it always wants me to restart to finish installation which never ends. i knew these problems were possible before i updated to sp3, but thought i should go ahead so i can try to learn whats going on, but have come up stumped. can anyone tell me what might be causing these problems?..when i use sp2, and update all the available updates, except for sp3, i have no problems at all. ijust so you know, i installed windows xp home sp2 from installation disc, as soon as that was done i installed sp3, then my drivers, rebooted, noticed problems with my wireless, id always have to disable then re-enable it for it to work after everytime i reboot, then installed the rest of available updates from microsoft, then i installed said anti virus and ad aware programs, and started having these problems...thanks for the input and knowledge, if any

Microsoft said and I will repeat now:

INSTALL SP3 ON XP ONLY IF YOUR SYSTEM DOESN'T WORK PROPERLY WITH THE SP1 OR SP2!!!

Look service pack is a pack of bug fixes in Windows OS and every new service pack contains new fixes, but also brings new bugs.If everything works fine with SP2 then leave it and install SP3 ONLY if some of your programs or games require it!

However if you REALLY want to have SP3,you CAN have it,but you need to fool your system to tell it that you have SP2 when actually you have SP3.
NOTE: BEFORE DOING THE FOLLOWING PROCEEDURE,BE SURE THAT YOU HAVE INSTALLED ALL 3 SERVICE PACKS ONE BY ONE!!!!!!!!SP1,SP2 and SP3!!!
So if you REALLY want to have SP3,you CAN have it,but you need to fool your system to tell it that you have SP2 when actually you have SP3.To do that, open the Windows registry editor and go on the following location:

"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Windows\"

There find the DWORD value called "CSDVersion",right click on it then click the button called "Modify".Now change the number from "300" to "200".Click the "OK" button, close the Windows registry editor and restart your computer...

Cheers!

You have a link?

According to Windows Update, Service Pack 3 is listed as an "Important Update".

Wonder why they would say not to install it...

:good: Hell yeah, when I had XP Microsoft was always reminding me to update to SP3 via auto update.

LoL I read that more then 5 months ago.I don't remember where I read that.Microsoft can change their mind million times in 5 months lol. When SP3 came out,it was not an important update.A month later it became an important update.Besides...the user should decide wether he needs SP3 or not...

You people are just downloading and installing tons and tons of the updates which you really do not need. There is really no point in installing the new updates as soon as they come out.Install only those updates which you REALLY need.Installing the newest updates all the time really has no point. You are filling your HDD and registry with tons of things you don't need. And then you ask your self why you are having so much problems on your computer. If your computer works great with the current updates and SP2 then there is REALLY NO POINT IN UPDATING IT.INSTALL ONLY THOSE UPDATES WHICH YOU REALLY NEED IN ORDER TO MAKE SOME PROGRAMS OR GAMES TO WORK,BUT OTHERWISE THERE IS REALLY NO POINT.

alright i guess the question is, why would anyone need service pack 3. and how would i be able to tell which updates to download and which ones not too. i cant stand windows updates because it seems pointless to have all these updates for a systme that already works fine, im just concerned that i may miss a update that is important to my systme that is critical, so i tend to just download many uneeded ones. anyways any help pertainig to the cause of my problems would be appreciated

I dont think SP3 is your problem. As far as what S.T.A.R.S. said, ignore it. Look in his second post first sentence (read it 5 months ago) gives me PC eye flash backs. Any SP when its first released is risky to install and its always been that way, nothing new. But SP3 is not a new release now is it? Most driver and programs issues have been worked out now.

Plus what computer is this happening to, make and model or setup?

I don't hate service packs.I just said that if the computer works properly and great then there is really no need for updates unless if its needed. No more no less...

i notice these problems on almost aany pc ive updated to. like isaid i tried it to work out issues i knew i would have from previous experiences with sp3...its mailny with ad-aware and virus programs, and my wireless..thats it

If everything works well on your computer under the SP2 then leave the SP2 and update to SP3 only if some of your programs or games really need it...
Otherwise there is no point lol.You are just complicating your life:D

And yes...service packs ARE the packs of many bug fixes in OS and I totally agree that the user should have it installed, but sometimes new bug fixes make conflicts with some other devices on the user's computer so if everything works great under the previous SP version then there is no point in installing the newest updates every time they come out if the computer works properly...I know that it sounds much better to have all the newest updates installed as soon as they come out,but in many cases they will screw up your OS because there are many conflicts that occur with so MANY updates...

I repeat one more time...IF YOUR COMPUTER WORKS GREAT THEN THERE IS NO POINT IN INSTALLING THE NEWEST UPDATES AS SOON AS THEY COME OUT,UNLESS IF SOME SPECIFIC PROGRAMS OR GAMES REALLY NEED IT/THEM IN ORDER TO WORK!

Cheers everyone!

I agree

I could do without all the color as well. I dont enjoy being blinded.

SP3 is necessary in my opinion, it patched numerous problems with XP, and it was realeased ages ago and the bugs have been worked out. The people I've seen having problems with SP3 were the ones with older machines.

However, I don't allow XP to just install any updates without me seeing them first. I set the updater to tell me when windows updates are ready and available; then I go to Microsoft update page (you have to use I.E.) to see what all is included, and what else I could get at the same time.

Every now and then updating can be a pain. For instance, I've had updates with drivers included in the update package. Thats a big no no for me since I'm on a Dell. And I should really only get my Driver/BIOS updates from Dell.

It doesnt hurt to check an see what your updating, but they usually arent so big they kill your HDD or cause massive problems.

Not installing updates is what will give you problems.

(PS: MS office (word, excel, etc...) loaded faster once I had added SP3, at least 30 seconds faster)
