Problems with starting up Dell Dimension E520

Hi, a couple of years ago I bought a Dell Dimension E520 off the internet for £350 with just the usual basic RAM and disc space. I've steadily added files and material over those two years, as one does, partly because of my requirements for my uni course (now completed).

These days however I find that its incredibly slow starting up. I regularly get the message 'Google Desktop has failed to start up', something which has been happening since shortly after I first started using it. However, for about a year now I have also been receiving an error message which reads "A program can't display a message on your desktop". I've learned to avoid clicking "show me the message" because whenever I do that, the computer immediately shuts down and thus I have to start the computer up all over again.

In the drop down tab to this error message, it tells me that the program or devices requiring attention is MS Visual C++ Runtime Library and that its something to do with Roxio (which I have installed on my computer) and its partial incompatibility with Windows Vista. I'm not sure what this Roxio thing is, so what will happen if I uninstall Roxio? Will that resolve this error message?

Also because of the length of time that it takes for internet explorer to kick in, it tends to throw up an error message saying that I can't connect to the internet, but when I run a diagnostic it then says that I am connected to the internet. I usually get past this by doing a system restore and that usually does the trick.

I suspect that I might have to upgrade the RAM on this thing, I'm guessing that the lack of RAM might be something to do with all this, but I'm not sure. I'm not technically minded concerning computers by any means and so have no idea what all this stuff is, all I want is to be able to start the thing up relatively quickly.

Any ideas

It's most likely time for a fresh install of the Operating System. Do you have reinstall CD's for the operating system and drivers? I wouldn't even try messing with it and just do a fresh install. How much memory is installed? 1gb should be fine as long as you aren't doing anything memory intensive.

press ctrl+alt+delete (not backspace, this key is above the left arrow) and click performance at the top tabs. c how close the using all the ram is is, also check the cpu %, keep it open for a little while starting and performing tasks.

if you dont remember right click my computer in the start thingy,
