Problems with UMDF?

A friend of mine screwed up my notebook (Dell Inspiron 6000, Media Center Edition 2002) the other day, and i'm trying to recover and repair everything on here. The last problem seems to be lying with my Windows Driver Framework. When I try to start it from the services tab, I get the generic error 31 message.
I don't really want to restore to factory settings, so i'm trying to get some help here. I don't have the recovery diskfrom Dell anymore, so that's not really an option either.
Help?

I will need the service tag of the system (which is located on a sticker attached to the bottom of the notebook) to arrange for the CDs to be sent out.

From what you've stated it sounds like you should be able to just do a Repair installation to get the system fixed correctly.
