Problems with WinMovieMaker

I have windows Movie Maker version 5.2 (SP3). Most of the time it works just fine. But every so often it will not save a compilation and hangs up at a certain clip. The clip plays fine from its starting position but after it has been transferred to the timeline it pauses itself. This is when WMM hangs up saving the movie file when it reaches this section. I have moved that trouble clip around the time line and can see that it's the one causing the problem. However, if i delete that section of the clip (using split and delete), all it does is move that bad section of the clip up a bit to the same location. And the movie save still fails. Anyone know a way around this? The problem always seems to happen to FLV files that i have converted to WMV (before importing to WMM). Any help from experienced users appreciated. thanks

Sounds to me like a dodgy conversion, what software are you using to convert your FLV files into WMVs? I'd recommend downloading and installing Free Studio and try using that to convert your video. Once you've converted your files I'd then try and again and see if the same still happens.

Thanks, but no, i have considered that quite early on and so i used three different converters and several times re-did the files but always the same. I looked up WMM problems on Google and have read literally pages of complaints and problems about WMM, many of which concern the problem i have as well. I think it just a troublesome program and many people are not happy with it i can see.

Movie Maker for XP is just extremely buggy. I loved what I could do with it, but totally hated working with it when I did. If you're stuck with XP I recommend finding a better program to use.

Movie Maker in Vista isn't much better either. Never really used it myself, but if you want a free video editor I'd say have a look at Lightworks.

thanks, i suspected as much. There's also another big problem with the timeline; many times when a clip is put to the timeline it will copy the effects (eg slow down, speed up etc) from a previous clip, even if that clip is deleted, the effects seem to be transferred to the time line so that whatever clip goes at that area will be affected. I have looked at another video Editor from NCH Software called Video Pad Video Editor Professional. It is about $40 with the discount they usually give you and i don't mind paying that for something that works. I also use other NCH software and it is great

I'd just buy Sony Vegas Movie Studio, see here - it's gonna be better than anything else in that price range. I've got HD Platinum 10, it's great - easy to use and very stable.
