If you have a Windows XP operating system get to the "Run" icon and type "MSCONFIG" in the run option. This will enable you to disable programs that start everytime you boot into Windows.

As above, you can use it to disable the auto start using MSCONFIG.
But if you cannot find the files, then you can use a "Whitelister", which allows you to see which programs are safe to run, and which you actually want to run in the background.

System Safety Monitor is a free whitelister.

Go into your control panel and look for "Windows Update" (I could be wrong but I think that is the title). Click on that and then find the Service Pack 1 update in the list of updates. It is pretty big so it may take around 15 minutes or longer to download.

Click on the Windows Icon to bring up the start menu.

Click on the "Run..." command

Type "MSINFO32"

Under the System Summary what does it say on the "Version" line?

Well, you obviously have Service Pack 1 for Vista.

As I previously stated, whenever I have programs that I don't want to run at start up I use MSConfig.
